ALDI helmet cam $70

Postby Jangari » Tue Dec 11, 2012 2:46 pm

Has anyone seen these?

I recall Aldi have had them before, so I'm wondering whether anyone's bought one and can recommend them for the price. Seems like a good deal if they work adequately.

Looks surprisingly similar to the Kaiser Baas one at OfficeWorks:

Except the Aldi deal includes a memory card and is cheaper by a few bucks...

Looks very like one reviewed by our very own Nate, go to his site rigidmount.com and have a read.

There are two versions of this camera RD32 (720p) and RD32II (1080p).
Google RD32 and you'll find quite a number of reviews.

Thanks guys,

Seems that the dropped frames thing is a bit of an issue and that the RD32II is the one to go for if any. But that's still twice the price for the time being.

I reckon I'll save my money for now and get either an RD32II or save up more and get a GoPro.

Updated the Rigid Mount web address (no .au) so it will work now. Nate is still taking a break and we are also seeing more mounts on the market as well.

Tried to pick up one of these for a gift this morning at Aldi Caloundra. Apparently there was a line at the door at 6:30am so I had no chance at 9am. What soul destroying places those stores are.

Those Aldi cameras are the terrible 1st gen infrared RD32. I use one daily (got mine from DealExtreme a 18 months ago), but it's a complete pile of crap. Infrared at night means it has no IR filter on the camera, which turns everything purple during daytime. MJPEG compression looks like garbage and needs a class 10 card to not drop frames. The handlebar mount is junk and broke after a couple months, and was almost useless before then due to rattles. The battery was also dead after a year of daily use, and no standard replacement meant I had to find a similar RC LiPo battery and solder it in.

I ended up ripping an IR filter out of an old digital camera and gluing it over the lens cover on the camera, so at least the colours are correct now. Strapped it on my helmet since it uses a non standard mount so no easy replacement for the handlebar mount. Might be able to use one of the handlebar mounts for flashlights, though.

But seriously, don't get this camera. The RD32 II isn't great either, but at least it's 1080p, uses h264 compression, and has an IR filter.
