Boutique steel racing frame recommendationsHi all,
I love my steel bikes but prefer to run modern parts for lightness and adjustability, the 1" threaded steerer is a drag sometimes when looking for a good fork to run and seat posts etc. I'm looking for a nice steel frame that will take a 1 & 1/8" steerer, and 27.2 or other modern standard size seat post in triple butted steel to make a lightish crit racer out of. All I can think of is the Soma (Tange infiniti) and Surly frames (4130) has anyone got any other suggestions? Regards, Ben
Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendationsI know these are in Sydney but worth considering...

Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendationsYou forgot Cinelli Super Corsa
There are plenty of NOS frames about on ebay and other sites like Matuz Master (sp ?) Depends on how much you want to pay and what the key criteria are.
Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendations

Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendationsBen,
The handbuilt M.H.Jones (Perth) is still available, BTW But this could be another alternative way to go, and fulfill most of your requirements. Get a nice steel frame and go with the carbon fork option (below) Best of both worlds, and works so well. It's a nice ride. Just a thought. For nearly 100 of the last 110 years of the TdF, that is all the master pros rode on. Not sure I see what the problem with 1" steerers really is. Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.

Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendations
I think Matuzmaster is kaput. I cannot Google him (or her) up at all. There are legacy links, but all of them are dead as far as I can see. I'm looking hard at a new steel road frame in 2013 and my (not yet complete) list of possibilities is: Custom build options (excluding Baum & Llewellyn, which are extremely pricey) 1. Kumo 2. Paconi/Cecil Walker 3. Bobo 4. Europa 5. Joe Cosgrove 6. Paconi 7. Colossi Off the peg 1. Soma Smoothie 2. De Rosa Neo Primato 3. Enigma Elite (semi-custom) 4. De Rosa Corum 5. Masi Gran Criterium 6. Colossi (Zona) 7. Champione (Zona) 8. Genesis Equilibrium (Reynolds 725) 9. Jamis Eclipse I think I'm leaning towards a Colossi as the prices are pretty good, though whether I go for off-the-peg or custom is as yet undecided. I'm not looking for a crosser, but this appeals (part from that chunky saddle) ![]()
Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendationsMatuzmaster doesn't have a website anymore. He still trades on fleabay.
I'm not sure what his seller name is but if you search on Coppi frames he's the one selling NOS Thron frames and other bits and bobs. Shame as he had some good gear, I got a great wheelset from him. I can personally recommend a frame by Peter Bundy in Sydney ![]() Reynolds 531C, very reasonable price, paint by Star Enamellers and 1 inch threaded steerer with quill stem like a pretty bike has. Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendations
..and so useful to the OP/thread.... I can just see him lining up for the crits on a 'priceless' collectable completely tweaked 650B with racks. On another note, what happened to that guy that wanted to drillium a repco until failure? I haven't been around for a while.
Re: Boutique steel racing frame recommendations
TIC, in case you missed the razz. Anyway part of the point was that steel has a long history of being lightweight. Look hard enough and the OP may find a classic lightweight frame on ebay or other second-hand sales.
