If its the latter of course you need to take the yearly total with a ginormous grain of salt. So much so that I would not even bother personally.
But if you already have a yearly total and you are using the same device again, then its a fair and reasonably accurate comparison.

I'll probably be back to around 150,000 next year. I had a trip to France this year which helped with winter motivation and added a few more meters.
