Wheels stuck - Raleigh Twenty

Postby TomBikes » Fri Dec 14, 2012 8:50 pm

I'm fixing a Raleigh Twenty and I'm pretty much done, i just need to replace the front tube. Problem is, the wheel wont budge from the frame. The nuts are off and there is nothing which seems to be holding it on, I can't see any rust either. Any ideas what i could do? I though of prying the forks a bit but there's nothing to leverage against except the spokes, which I don't think would be a very good idea. Any ideas?

Thanks

You could try tapping the axle with a hammer while placing downward pressure on the wheel. just be sure to protect the thread on the end of the axle by screwing a nut onto it and hitting that instead of the exposed shaft. good luck

Assuming of course you've released the brake caliper :)

The tire is fully deflated so their is no problem removing it without disengaging the brake caliper. It is thinner then the rim. I'll give that a shot tomorrow and hopefully I get some success. Thanks!

Is there one of those washers that have the little hooks that locate into the the fork and stop the wheels from falling out? :?

SMACK IT WITH A HAMMER!!!

No don't, You should be able to gently lever it out with a screw driver.

to get the wheels out of my twenty, I have to spring the drop outs apart and at the
same time use my index fingers to lift the wheel of the drop outs, the cone locknuts
have a sort of ridge which slots into a recess inside the drop outs.
hope that makes sense.

According to Sheldon 20's ran to a non standard axle diameter and hub spacing, could this have sopmething to do with it?

If it has the tabbed washer, that'll have to come off to release the wheel.

Thanks for the help, i just had to pull the forks a little and lift the wheel out. They are pretty solid forks!
