Video camera 808 #16 start problem

I have an 808 #16 camera, with an 808#16 auxilliary power pack.
Getting it to start recording is a lottery, with about the same odds as lotto offers.
I press the power button until the red turns yellow, then press the shutter button. The camera then either turns off, or the orange light blinks and it records for a few seconds and then turns off.
Sometimes I get it to start and continue recording after a dozen attempts; sometimes I dont.
The firmware has been updated to a version released in about October 2012, with no improvement.

Any suggestions please?

check the memory card, what brand are you using?

Sounds like my old #16 it would get confused easily, try
another card I also wait ~5sec between power on and pushing
the shutter I found it helped and do this with both #16s.
