G'day

Anyone a member of or had experience with the West Coast Masters Cycling Council or can you suggest other good racing clubs for oldies (40 + :) )?

Thanks
Andrew

I can't help with racing, but the guys in the WA Audax group seem to be a good bunch. "Racing" against myself is more to my liking, so I'm joining their rides.

I'm doing a 200km ride this Saturday. Pickering Brook to Toodjay (via Bakers Hill pie shop) and back to Pickering Brook. Should be fun.

Cheers,
Graeme

Racing for Masters.

The West Coast Masters hold events most Sundays and they are mostly massed start races on the road. Secretary 08 9295 3265 (H)
The Austrialian Time Trilas Association hold only time trials, mostly in the summer months, with one a month in the winter time. President 0408 902 349 (Mob)

Do the masters cater for slower riders 20-25kmh?
What’s with these recumbent bicycles? Listen, buddy, if you wanna take a nap, lie down. If you wanna ride a bike, buy a bicycle

The West Coast Masters Cycling Club is a road cycling race club for anyone over the age of 35. During the winter months they run a series of road races and during the summer months they run a criterium series. Cyclists are graded from A to D so that you race against others of a similar standard. I don't know if D grade are going to travel at an average speed of 20-25km/h. It is possible to join the club and participate in 2 races before committing to a full membership. I would think that if you became involved your standard would soon exceed the 20-25km/h average velocity.
The summer criterium series is a good starting point as the D grade races are only 30 minutes + 2 laps and are conducted within the metro area.

Sorry Andrew I can't help you there as it doesn't apply to me!

I can only say that for the next 5 months!

ahhh, but what about riders slower than 20-25kmh (this is not an oxymoron, nor a tautology).

the correct answer is probably an emphatic NO! as they cater for "racing" as opposed to"falling off" due to a lack of forward momentum

I'm just happy I could read that last sentence without the use of glasses.

G'day

I got this email from Simon and he agreed to my posting it here.
I noticed your comment on a forum about thinking about joining the West Coast Masters cycling club. Just wanted to say I joined recently (have only done two races) and its been great. It's been very un-intimidating, also if you join now it covers you through until the end of 2009. The criterium races are held over summer, I dont think this is on their website.... so I wouldn't wait around until 2009 if I was you.

G'day

Okay getting my act together and hoping to get along for the criterium on February 22 at Kewdale. It is a graded scratch race. Does anyone care to explain what that means?

Also does anyone know if one has to wear a plain jersey if not in a Club or team jersey?

Thanks
Andrew

A through to E grade , real scientific stuff the grading , they sort of ask you how fit you are & where do you want to ride?

Anybody over 30 for women & over 35 for men , biggest grade is B Grade I think last week there was over 40 riders would have averaged around 40km/hr , so if you are averaging early 30's on your training on your own you should be able to handle that.

Remember guys & to alsser degree girls are racing well into their Seventies hence the E Grade , so if you are half fit & under 50 etiquette sort of dictates you don't start lower than C Grade, if you find that is kind of easy ..best not rip everybodies legs off on the first week , just sit in the bunch & learn some skills then move up a Grade the following week, obviously go for the win on the first ride by all means but attacking an obviously weaker field from the gun is not really the done thing.

Never jump on a faster grade if you have entered a lower grade , they tend not to have similar grades on the course at the same time, though .

Any other stuff you want to ask ????

Thanks for all this. Do you still stock the Council's jerseys? Also you might want to check the Weather widget on your blog unless it is meant to be New York :)

Any jersies with sleeves long or short are fine ie no tri tops or singlets , Australian champion & World Champion jersies are kind of frowned upon unless you are actually an afore mentioned .

We have some shirts left but not many, from memory euro fit Large ?? 50 bucks each plus we have some medium shorts but just ring first & I can rummage through the bag.

G'day

Next dumb question but couldn't find the answer on the Club website. Where are the crits held in Kewdale? That is where does one go for the registration.

Thanks
Andrew
