Help with frame ID /tyre sizing

I need help to Identify the brand of this frame, Warren (from this forum) has discounted its not a Malvern Star as logoed.
Headset is Made in England, only identifying marks apart from the frame numbers.
My mate has asked me to get it to a rideable state before he paints it. (Next Year)
It was his grandmothers bike & is known to be 40 plus years old. He wants to show his grandfather at Xmas as pop is not expected to make another year?

Q2) He supplied me with 28"tyres but they will not fit. Bead Depth of the wheel measures 642mm & the tyres are labelled (37-622) which is the depth of a 700c wheel????? so the 28" must be a misnomer, the tyres are new but carry no company brand, supplied by a retro bike supplier on the net.

Q3) can any member shed some light on a correct tyre & where to obtain same?

photo of front of head lugs needed but could be Speedwell, tyres should be 28 x 1 3/8.....

I have a Healing (or at least that's what the decals said when i found it) which is identical, it has 26 x 1-3/8 wheels.

There are several different 28" tyre sizes.
37 642 is 28 x 1 3/8", the most common 28" tyre size in Australia up until the mid 1960's. These are available, and this is what you need. Dont buy 28 x 1 1/2", as these are 635mm, and wont fit your aussie rims. 28 x 1 1/2" fits a lot of the old style roadster bikes from aailable from India and China now.
As you have found, 37 622 is 700C, sometimes called 28", and labelled as 28".

As an aside, '700C', 622mm rim size was available as an option from about 1895 to 1905 on Australian bikes, as it took a tyre size called 28 x 1 3/4", a big tyre for rough roads. These very early 28" rims are super rare, but if you find some, a modern 700C tyre will fit!

Thanks to those who replied,
Sheldon Brown also suggests that the Bead Seat Dia, of 642 is a 700A (28 x 1,3/8)
BSD of 635 is a 700B (28 x 1,1/2 )
BSD of 622 is a 700C (28 x 1,5/8 x 1,1/4)

(The tyre I have is a 700C & the BSD measures 642!!!)

well you wont find any outsde Oz (maybe Thailand still use them?) there are normally on EbayOz and your LBS can order them from their suppliers, some just couldnt be bothered :) hows that photo going?

More clues to ID, the brake reaction arm & rear hub are engraved "Super Granat"

The chain ring is a 44 the sprocket is an 18.

Yes it was sandbalsted while assembled you can only imagine the Bl**d* mess!!!!!!!!!
Tyres arrived today & they fit :D :D :D , wrong ball bearing size sent for the headset, can it be so hard :shock:.Re- order tomorrow,
New cones for the front axel, but of course they fit the hub ,but not the axel, so get a new axel made?
Recut all the axel nuts as they are so rounded, meanwhile my friend is a Chiropractor so I hope his cheque book is open????

All being well granfather will see it riden at Xmas?

Well "Nan" is resurected & rideable for now. It will be stripped down again & painted after Xmas.
The owner is searching period colours & is keen to have all bright ware replated, hopefully he will respoke the rims for a better look.
Riding this old girl is like a recliner with pedals :D :D really puts a :) on your face.

Good job its a stepthrough, I don't think I could swing my leg over a crossbar this size :lol: the wheels at 642 seem massive. Must weigh it tomorrow.

I can imagin the mess , its not recommended to do that :( otherwise its getting there, is there a date code on crank or chainwheel?

Only the numbers I've previously posted, the chain ring has only 44. The owner has been researching & as others have posted the frame appears to be a Speedwell.
Would like to know the age?

Is it just me or is that fork bent. The top of the crown where it enters the bottomof the head tube is not in alignment with the tube. Looks like its been pushed backward. Have you inspected it thoroughly?

First request was to get the bike rideable to show the Grandpa at Xmas. There were bearings missing from the lower headset, so I substituted with larger, I suspect thats what the photo is showing.
Now its to be painted before Xmas???? don't like the chances? so I stripped it today & have ordered correct bearings.
I didnt notice any damage when dis-assembling, but I'm no expert. :)

NOW its be given to the Dad for Xmas??

If my friend gets it back it will be again stripped & pro painted & pinstriped like when Nan had it.
The whole bike is so solid cosidering 4x grandsons couldn't break it, virtually no wear, bearings/chain/ rear end .
Badly needs a set of guards.

Thanks Lachlan, the paint is so fresh it still smells, I had to be so careful assembling. I think the owner nailed with the colour scheme.
