Hey mate, I have to ask because number 14 is on route & I'm contemplating buying number 15 from Italy.
Do you have a rotation roster on which bike you ride or do you just whatever you feel like?
I know if I was to do it just whilly nilly then I'd just ride one or 2 bikes & the others would never get serviced, if you use a roster, does it work?

Yep willy nilly, like everything else i do . It's partly what i feel like using, and partly using the right tool for the job, so if i want to go fast i use my crabon Oppy or my Dawes if it's not too hilly, for long rides i have my Apollo Concorde with triple cranks and MTB cassette, single speed Repco if it's not hilly and i don't need to go fast, Repco cruiser with basket for getting shopping, any of the bikes with 27" wheels if i absolutely CAN'T have a puncture. I absolutely love restoring old road bikes, especially the painting, i'll be pretty happy if i can follow in joe cosgrove's footsteps.
They do all get used, though naturally some more than others, i have my favourites . It's like women and shoes .

I offered the bugger me new frame to build & ride, if he likes it, I was even gunna sell it to him for wot I paid for it.
The ungrateful borstead now spits his dummy out 'cause we have a bit of a chat.

but really, that's rubbish. We get none of it because the choices are illusory.
it's not the community, or the bicycle. it's more the sense of value i put on the bikes and parts.
why do i value it? what is it worth to someone if they take it for free? why does it mean so little to them when it means so much to me?

Yeah I know what you mean, some of my stuff ain't worth much, my CFR Pro that I got 13th in the '98 World Championships is probably worth maybe $500 (except to a collector it's only just a bonded composite frame with 600 tri-colour gruppo), but I wouldn't sell the bike for a million bucks, it's only valuable to me.
That's why all my bikes are chained or locked except the bike I'm riding the next day.
I know how ya feel, that's why I offered the Razzy to ya, thought you & it may make some kind of connection (bit like me & the Verty, ugly piece of gear but I love it), it ain't a Raleigh Race, but it has some pedigree.
Because the reality is that the value you put on it is sentimental and personal, and in the harsh real world reality that's worth sweet faark all mate.
I'm totally over it as well and selling up to fund a modern roadie. All the blood sweat and tears, chasing around, dickin around building means sweet FA unless you have a keeper. My experience is there is no keeper, just another must have frame/build that hangs unused in the shed and screams "look at the idle $$$$ hangin around". Bikes are a cheapish hobby that enables common working class folk the ability to amass and hoard multiple items that never really get used as the maker intended. My anti sentimentality ethics have finally over ridden my whimsical weaknesses and need to have a particular style that crops up on forums and the like.
One commuter(fixed) and one fancy roadie, and limited time wasted on forums crappin on, and more time actually riding are my plans for my time left on this planet.
Mate, time to take a break from hobby bike mechanic. Get on a bike and ride shed loads of km's.
When that is done, come to a race, pin on a number, have some fun flogging yourself with other middle aged buggers, then a cold beer afterward.
It's just the next step in the process. If you don't think you'll like racing, go back and read Hinault's book again.

I reckon I get him out to a track night, yeah me bike will prolly end up pranged but it'd be worth the chuckle.
Mate, what he needs is a little of Uncle Wal's 'HTFU princess', we'll get him out next Raturday, I'll stick the track elbows, shoulders & headbutt on him, that'll get him to man up a bit.
(I ain't playing kid gloves with him, he just needs a good boot up the backside to get his head straight).
Not always good advice, there is bicycle life outside of racing.
Me, I don't like taking part in racing. Bit like boxing, nice to watch but to compete would be pointless as there is no way I will be any good at it again unless I trained like I did when I was 21 years old (or harder). My wife wouldn't like that and I find training so boring these days, let alone all the time it takes up, and half training is just pretending IMHO if you are going to compete.
