Sunglasses FOR THE ROAD!

Postby kunalraiker » Thu Dec 27, 2012 1:51 pm

I know, I know
Not another Sunglasses thread, but guys there are millions of sunglasses out there.
Just too hard to pick one.
The budget is the biggest factor, would like to stick to $25.00 if possible.
I would either like something photochromatic or atleast interchangeable glasses.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Get something from JetBlack or a safety shop. Your budget doesn't leave much to work with and I wouldn't think your in the right ballpark for photocromatics at $25.00.

The torpedo7 ones look pretty good and are very cheap when on sale

+1

If your budget is really that tight, your best bet will be safety glasses or servo specials.. Don't expect anything flash at that price though. If you have a friend in construction or mining industry ask if they can get you a few pairs of safety glasses from work.

I need some decent glass, as I would like not spoiling my eyes.
If I do up my budget what would I be looking for and in what price range.

Are you missing a zero slash did you misplace a decimal?

For $25 you can get fake Oakley jawbones or radars. If nothing else it confirms that you like the shape and that there is worth forking out the big bucks.

I have a pair of fake jawbones ($60 from monton) and fake radars ($20 from eBay). The jawbones were a poor rip off (!!!!) as I was told they were indistinguishable from the real thing... Turns out they were very distinguishable. It also happened that I hated the frame shape, it created blind spots in my field of vision.

The radars were also a poor copy but at $20 I couldn't complain. The frame also doesn't intrude on my FOV.

So importantly I now know what works for me, and also see value in spending a bit of $$$ on shades.

When I have spare $200 radars will be on the shopping list.

Unfortunately I can't elaborate on the difference between $20 and $50 shades, although I suspect it would be like night and day.

Try Ribble http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... uotzgla200. They have among others Kuota 5 lens set for $33 (plus postage of course). If you order over $50 they cost $26.
They meet Aust. standards. For the price they are pretty rugged yet cheap enough not to mourn if you lose them.
I got 2 sets 2 yrs ago and still using the first pair, some surface scratches etc but still presentable

I got a set of Jetblack glasses from the LBS for about $40. Can recommend for a cheap set that work well.

Scan all the listings at Ribble
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/pp/road-t ... asses/zgla" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
BBB's are good enough imho.
Friends have the best Rudy's and Oakleys, and they both look weathered and old after a year of riding...and the lenses do scratch.
I've lost or broken a few pairs of good glasses, so I reckon it's better to pay <$75, and budget to replace more often.

I was looking at the Jetblack, will probably head down to the store to check them out.

Whatever you get, make sure they are polarised.

I picked up a nice pair of polarised sunnies from the sunglasses shop at the Brisbane Airport DFO complex for $25. If you can hit up the DFO/factory outlet centres, then you have a much better chance of getting something half-decent for a handful of bucks...

Just buy a pair of Oakley Jawbones, you can buy photochromic lenses from Walleva in the USA, they work terrific & are a fraction of the price of the Oakley ones.

Yep it's all over your limit of $25 but I reckon my Jawbones have outlasted 10 pairs of cheap glasses.

I think about $200 for the Jawbones & around $70 for the photochromic lenses, so all up $270, but I got 3 or 4 sets of lenses with the glasses, so it's not a bad buy when you consider the quality. I don't change out the photochromic lenses when I'm riding road, day, night, wet, it doesn't matter. I fit the amber ones when I'm riding the MTB.

There aer way too many fakes out there, makes me very suspicious for purchasing them online, but that's where you get the fine prices

Buy from a reputable dealer, if you buy from the US you can pick them up for around $180 these days, I purchased mine from Livestrong (glad to make the donation & still happy to have done it), I've since changed the nose pieces, lower arms (something you can't do on the copies), the earsocks, mine are now pure black with the original yellow Oakley 'O' on one arm (not sure when the other fell off), I was wearing them for work (which was why they needed new nose pieces & earsocks), they are comfy enough to wear all day, every day.

Yes I have noticed a few blindspots, but anything that protective you will find that (they are rated to handle a high velocity impact), I get supplied tinted safety glasses at work, while they do the job, you only have one set of eyes & they are very fragile in reality, I'm quite happy to spend a couple of hundred to ensure they are well protected.

although not famous in the cycling world (moreso the motorcycling world ...) , uglyfish do reasonably priced photochromatics (that you can equip with prescriptions on the interior if need be) ,have foam inserts for an almost goggle like seal, are impact resistant and can be adjusted to either house a strap or standard sunglass arms - I picked mine up for about $112 although they usually are about $20 more than that

Do polarised v/s non-polarised make much difference, as I'am getting another used pair for double this price but with one polarised lens.

While polarized lenses are good, I wouldn't necessarily make it the be all and end all.

Thanks Mark, I think having started a thread with recommendations for $25.00, I should stick with something at $100.00 rather then $200.00
If Polarized is not a nessasity.

I had non polarized jawbones for 2 years and just recently switched to polarized flakjackets. They're probably only marginally better, but I wouldn't go outta my way to buy them purely for the polarized lenses.
