Guess the weight of a Kmart kids bike:

Postby thecaptn » Mon Dec 24, 2012 10:16 pm

A friend of ours bought a 40cm bike for her 4yo grandson from Kmart and I offered to assemble it for her. Including training wheels: 11.805 kg.
Would make a good boat anchor.

Yep. Kids bikes are often heavier than their parents bikes. Lucky they don't ride them much... I mean I wonder how much they would if they were decent...

I just fixed up a hard rubbish find for my nephew (5 y.o.) on behalf of my in-laws, and I swear it weighs as much as my 62cm steel roadie.

Funny, my kids' bikes also weigh more than mine. That's like me riding a 50Kg bike!!! Crazy!

They arn't all rubbish.

Like everything you get what you pay for. Never ceases to amaze me that parents will spend $4k plus on a bike for themselves but wouldn't spend a quarter of that to get a decent bike for junior.

@Jacks, that could well be because kids change size so rapidly, somewhat defeating the purpose of buying a 'keeper' bike.

That being said I tend to see many teenagers riding bikes that they probably should have gotten rid of when they were 6...

Most adults I know would change their bikes over quicker than the kids would grow out of them :-)

Resale on a decent kids bike is also very good compared to an adult bike.

Yep, I was horrified how heavy my 3yr old's Kmart special was, especially after picking up a Madone 5.2 earlier that week.

Where are the 16"and 20" models then? It is easy to get 24" at a light weight.
Giant wrote: How much does this bike weigh? It’s a common question, and rightly so. But the truth is, there are no industry standards for claiming bike weights—and this leads to a lot of misinformation. Variances exist based on size, frame material, finish and hardware. And as bikes get lighter, these differences become more critical. At Giant, we believe the only way to truly know the weight of any particular bike is to find out for yourself at your local retailer.
Most manufacturers of kids bikes, i.e., below 24" won't publish the weights of their bikes for fear...

My wife recently came home from a garage sale with a kids bike for $10.00., perfect, could'nt buy the tyres for that, but why have they got two top tubes????
I would estimate it weighs 10/12kg plus???????????????? Grandson had one ride & went straight back to his undersize lightweight
