Okay ... I've had an attempt at searching for a route from Mornington to the base of the 1:20. Any suggestions?

Are you a roads only guy or just want the easiest way?

From Mordialloc I always take the Eastlink bike path from Cheltenham road, it winds around a bit with a few bridge crossings and over a train station but its sealed all the way to Colchester rd Kilsyth and from there its pretty close to Mountain Hwy and up. Or you could get off the bike path where Burwood and Mountain Hwy meet and go straight along Mountain hwy from there to avoid most of the dog walkers and joggers.

Much prefer the road, but maybe Nepean Hwy through to Carrum through to Patterson Lakes and join the Eastlink path at Dandenong and follow it through to Mountain Hwy ?

Sounds alright. Not exactly sure where but south of Dandenong somewhere the Eastlink path is gravel, never been further south than Cheltenham rd. Getting off the trail at Ferntree Gully rd and onto Burwood Hwy is a good way to get to Devil's Elbow if you ever want to try that way up or come back down that way.

The gravel/mud - depending on the time of year starts at Greens Rd and continues to Carrum
1.370" x 24 tpi - what sort of stupid standard is that?
