Is Channel 9 trying to kill cycling

Just found out that there will again be no big screen again in the TDU Village again this year and the highlight are being shown again as filler after 10 each night.

Given the poor commentating by the two WWOS idiots who kept trying to bring everything back to football during the Cronulla Crits I am beginning to think that this is deliberate on there part.

I know this is a bit conspiratorial but given that SBS have locked in all the major race for the next couple of years and the rise of soccer I am beginning to wonder if they are trying to protect their patch.

I thought after all the complaints last year that nine might of seen some common sense. But looks like maybe not, in one ear and out the other.

We have laws for lots of things eg: petrol price fixing etc.

Trouble is nobody enforces them.

TDU is managed by Events on behalf of SA Tourism Commission on behalf of the State Govt.

I considered it, but actually, I would mostly record the programme anyway. Ideal timing for me would be 8-9pm for viewing. I suppose I could complain so I can record it early then watch it later on the same day rather than next day as I did last year.

Yep, shame on Channel 9. Obviously trying to kill the sport by showing it live on TV so no one turns up to watch it in the flesh. I'll watch the highlights when I get back home from watching it unfold before my very eyes. Win win.

I know that 9 are showing more if the TDU this year but the timing are awful. Also not that the time they most of the highlights the stations are allowed far more advertising. So 2 hours is more likely to be closer to an hour of actual racing.

The worst part has been the commentators. Last year when Phill was not on the two (football being there normal game) had no idea what they were talking about. The riders actually started to avoid them and the lack of interviews started to show blithe endow the week. CyclingCentral still had great stuff for SBS nightly news though.

They were so bad for the Cronulla Crits I had to turn the sound down every time they came on. That and they managed to Upton a add during nearly every major event during the race.


The loss of the highlights in the village is a big killer for me. Loved having a beer before dinner watching the highlights listening to the crowd cheer.

1. It's always been considered netiquette NOT to comment on others spelling.

I wrote a letter of complaint to the Nine Network regarding the 2012 TDU coverage. I received this emailed response on the 18th on Dec 2012 - make of it what you will........




Thanks for your feedback and suggestions during and after the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under in regards to the TV broadcast programs screened on the Nine Network.



We thought it timely to touch base and update you in regards to the schedule for 2013. We have spent the last 12 months working to bring you even more TV coverage of the Santos Tour Down Under.



For the first time in the race’s history every stage of the Santos Tour Down Under will be shown LIVE on television on the Nine Network.



Coverage will kick off with the People’s Choice Classic on Sunday, January 20, (90 minute delayed program) followed by Stages 1-6 of the Santos Tour Down Under from Tuesday, January 22.



As the world’s best road cyclists fight it out on the streets of Adelaide, cycling fans will see more action LIVE and in HD on GEM in 2013. The Nine Network, which is broadcasting the event for the second time, will showcase the thrilling final two hours of each of the first four stages on GEM as part of a two and half hour daily live package.



To cap off an intense week of cycling, the entire final two stages of the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be broadcast LIVE on Saturday at 11.30am AEDT and Sunday at 1.30pm AEDT, January 26-27, on Channel Nine.

From what I can see the only day of delayed telecast is the prologue. If people bothered to read anything they would notice the coverage will be pretty much what SBS does with the TDF, end of the stages live plus a highlights show. This thread is embarrassing, next we'll have people whinging about the last stages being shown in full and live are inconvenient because they are too busy riding on the weekends to watch.

Its not the same as SBS TDF coverage. They show the stage live which I agree is in normally filler time like the live showing Olathe TDU but that's where it ends. SBS also showed a highlights package during prime early morning viewing each morning. Also SBS does not use commentators who have no idea about the sport.

Shown live every day... while I'm at work...OK I have the technology to record the stuff but as with the TDF I mainly watch the highlights show... which is at sometime approaching midnight...
So I record it to watch the next day..cos I'm interested but the average Joe Blow is not going to do this and so it will pass unnoticed by the general public.
Kudos for the live first and last stages but as for the rest.. Remember to most people the majority of a bike race is like watching paint dry, the highlights are the thing that people watch.

O.K, maybe I have misunderstood what they have meant by "showcasing" and "package", it makes it sound like there is some editing and delay going on there.
