Malvern star roadstar ladies bike

My parents 'rescued 'a bike for me that their friends were going to take to the tip, as they thought I might enjoy fixing it up.

The ex owner sent me a letter shortly afterwards telling me all about their history with the bike and seemed to be quite sentimental about it (even though they were going to take it to the tip). So now I feel obligated to try and restore it.

The bike appears to be hi tensile steel, and I can't see any name brands on anything much. It's a three speed hub gear and I'm guessing its from the 80s.

The thing is, it was stored outside in coastal qld and the owner used it as a clothesline for her wet cossies. The bike is absolutely covered in rust. There isn't a part ( to my mind ) that is suitable to be retained. Most of the chroming is ruined, and someone in the past has tried to tart it up with silver paint. The frame needs stripping and repainting. I estimate it will cost $100s to fix. I started stripping the parts off it and found a rust spot that goes quite deep (1 or 2 mm) into the frame tube. I'm wondering if this affects the structural integrity.

Well to be really honest i'm kind of hoping that it is terminal and I can send it on its way to the tip with a clear conscience.

Hold on... if it's a Malvern Star ladies bike does it have 28" wheels? If so, what condition are the forks in?

The tyres say 27 1/4 ". So I'm guessing the forks will be the wrong size?
