Maidstone to Melbourne

Postby kunalraiker » Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:09 pm

All,

I'am looking at riding to work,not really sure what the shortest route is, are there any websites that could trace out a cycle route based on start and end points?

Starting: Rosamond Road, Maidstone https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=ro ... a=N&tab=wl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Destination: Bowen Crescent, Melbourne https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=ro ... a=N&tab=wl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for your help!

- Maribyrning river path to Footscray Road,
- Follow Footscray road all the way though Docklands,
- Then over the Webb bridge onto Southbank,
- Along southbank all the way to St. Kilda Road, and Bob's your uncle.

It might be shorter going through North Melb, but probably not as safe. You have a good bike path at your front door.

Google maps have a cycling route calculator. It's still in Beta, but works pretty well for me.

+1 for Google Maps bicycle directions........ here. Looks OK for a route except for a silly dodge into New Quay - just stay on the Footscray Rd. bike trail here. Don't know whether it has given me the right Bowen Crescent.... down near Albert Rd??

Thanks All.

That was easy, although would have loved to have a bike lane on the westgate.

Just to add –
Mitchell St heading east from Rosamond Rd is very good for bikes.
You can keep going & cross Gordon St & link up Edgewater Blvrd, drop down the ‘steep’ decent, doglegging to Cumberland Drive & find the Maribyrnong river path & head downstream to Footscray Rd path.

I don’t have a good ‘plan B’ for dodging the climb of Edgewater Blvrd going home, apart from using your granny gear.
Farnsworth Ave still has a climb & also traffic during peak, with no bike lane to hide from the cars.

I know that way, probably a better route to take rather then dodging the traffic along Balarat road and droop st ?

Unfortunately....
Starting this week or next the bike path just past the old cattle bridge (Lynch's bridge opposite Newells paddock)will be closed for 4 months. I don't know if it will be both sides of the river but there has been a little side bridge erected on the other side of the river at the moment.
If both sides are closed get in touch. I live around the corner from your start point and know short cuts intimately and fairly safe.

Not worth the effort, I'd just +1 this...

...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Further to the bridge closure, Vic roads has put out a notice to state that the city side of the river will have a floating pontoon for cyclists and pedestrians to access Dynon and Footscray roads.
Some disruptions will still be in order but hopefully just minor.
