help! grinding after coaster hub re-grease.
hey all, im building a bike for my son and since rims were too expensive for our budget i decided to use some rims i had on another bike but they sounded like they had no grease in them at all. so i pulled the front apart and re-greased it no issues but the rear has me stumped. all the parts sprung out at first so google came to the rescue with that. got it all back in and working. braking is good coasting is awesome but if you power then stop without going back on the pedals it sounds like the clutch is still half activated and you can feel the teeth grinding.. i have pulled it apart many times over now and i still cant seem to work it out.
its hard to describe but im hoping i just done something wrong. it spins by hand freely and by the cog freely its just when you stop powering and leave the pedals close to powering it just grinds. im happy to make a video if it helps.
I'm guessing you are talking about the free wheeling hub sprags? It sounds like you have used way too much grease.
Pull it apart again and clean all the grease off it. Reassemble with a very small amount of chain lube or similar. That's all you need. If you must used grease use a very very light coating.

The OP is talking about a coaster hub . I don't think you can put too much grease in them!
Its been some decades since I pulled one apart, but if I recall the serrated cone thing is pulled towards the right side of the bike by the screw thread on the part the spocket connects to . When you pedal this clamps it to matching serrations in the hub body and they lock together.
When you stop pedaling and coast the "serrated cone thing" should get pulled around by the hub causing it to unscrew left along the "screw thread on the part the spocket connects to" . This disingages the drive. It sounds like this unscrewing isn't happening completely. Is there actually room for the serrated thing to unscrew before it moves far enough to push the wedge that spreads the brake shoes? And does the serrated thing screw easily on the threaded bit?

correct it is a coaster hub. i pulled it apart last night and degreased it and done dry runs by hand to see if i can find out the issue.
there is no serrated area on the hub/shell only on the clutch. from what i can tell is its not coming back off far enough as you stated also. we tried messing with the spring on the clutch but it just made things worse. the clutch is now getting wear marks on the top so chances are ill end up scrapping the wheel or seeing if i can remove the inners from a different rim to fit. i just cant see how you have any adjustment in them they are all fixed locations
