These Canberra roads have been destroying my rubber so I decided to give them a run

1. The roads I ride on have a hell of a lot of broken glass
2. Harder compounds pick up glass more easily than softer compounds. The softer compound of the Pro3Race tends to roll over the broken glass where the harder compound of the Gatorskin has less flex and the result is that the glass penetrates the rubber and gets picked up.

We'll have to see how the new ones perform, but however that is, they seem to have chosen a name that doesn't lend itself to taterskin-type nicknames. I'm just ordering a pair of the SS+ tyres for one of my sons in 28mm width tonight. Anyone tried them already?

Oh noes. No more Taters and the end of this thread looms.wqlava1 wrote:Continental appears to have stopped making the Gatorskin tyres last year. The new Conti equivalent appears to be the Supersports Plus. The only Gatorskins that people are now buying are if not old stock, at least ageing stock. I base this on Bike24 (who tend to have very current products) transitioning the gatorskins off their site, and only a few sizes left on Wiggle. I may be wrong!

+1 - hell yeah, it's your thread after all.Drubie wrote: I'd have gone with "Superspuds" but that's just me.
But you've gotta buy a pair of them so that you can offer a
proper warning to any unsuspecting buyers if they are just
a rebadge.
The threat of thread death demands to be unloomed in the
interest of good humour and the amusement of all of us.
Cheers

I think that should be easy to test. I'll contact the Continental distributor and inform them of the planned test:wombatK wrote:+1 - hell yeah, it's your thread after all.Drubie wrote: I'd have gone with "Superspuds" but that's just me.

2 x Continental Taterskins (still in my shed, un-used, purchased with my actual cash money)
2 x Continental Superspuds (provided free by the distributor)
2 x commonly available potatoes (can't decide between the French Fingerling (oo er!) and the Red Pontiac).
Test consists of inflating the fine tyres and rolling them over a typical stretch of rural road no more than 3km from the edge of town to ensure the regulation amount of glass from local bogans throwing their last roadie (that is road stubbie, not an actual cyclist) out the back window of their friends 1982 Falcon station wagon.
If the taterskins lasts more than 500m without a flat (unlikely) the test will be moved to another road. If the taterskins pssssssttttttsssss to a rapid halt, mount up the superspuds and see if they get further.
The control in this case is the boiled French Fingerlings, which should be rolled down the road for a few hundred metres to see how much glass penetrates the skin of the soft spud. If the Superspud makes it past 500m, the potato will be mashed and consumed glass and all. Call it the equivalent of eating your hat because I Refuse (heh!) to believe that Continental can make a tyre that boasts puncture protection that is any more effective than a soft boiled potato.

Are you trying to tell us that you have not actually ridden these fine tyres that you have bagged unmercifully for over three years now? Hmmmdrubie wrote:un-used

On my daughters roadie that only ever sees the track. She stopped riding (taterskin unrelated incident) although "unused" in this context means they've never seen broken glassMulger bill wrote:Hang on a moment...Are you trying to tell us that you have not actually ridden these fine tyres that you have bagged unmercifully for over three years now? With the Gatorskins you want the Hardshell version, they are good.Puffy wrote:I'm Mackay. Similarly wet! Had conti gp4000s black chillies on the forums recommendation. Went to gators just to try them very happy the day the sidewall went at about 1000km old. Back on the black chillies. Loving them!
I run them on our tandem and wear them down to the threads no problem.
