Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Societynice find rosscojj, if you bought it at the tip shop that means someone was throwing it out
amazes me what people get rid of, I was at a metal recycling place a few months ago and it was full of bikes, not allowed to go look tho', or take stuff back I couldn't get the brakes on my bike to work so I got a really loud horn, crisis over!
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyHey scratchman. I am in Bendigo. I see your over St Arnaud way. Sometimes the Bendigo tip/recycling shop at Eaglehawk has a decent road bike but they usually disappear quickly. If your over this way it might be worth a visit.
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Society
Nice colour & detail.
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyHi i just scored me a Malvern Star Excel, would it be worth getting it back to life??? Any idea of the age???

Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Society
Quite a big frame, looks like about 1984-1986. Definately worth resurrecting. I would suspect that they are 27 inch wheels. Good find. P.S. find a saddle for it. Recent Favorite rides:
December -TUMBULGUM to TOMEWIN by some obscure route-can't wait to do it again !!!
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyHello Malvern Star officionados, can anyone date approximately an Esquire gents bike, 6 sp, originally with a positron shift system?
I want to ride in L'Eroica at Beechworth in April and the cut off is supposed to be 1980s or earlier. D
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyFound a Malvern Star 2 star in the shearing shed. Serial number is 4P326. I am from WA and assume the P means made in Perth. The sturmey archer hub has 53 on it. I'm assuming the frame was made around 1953. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Societypositron started in 1975 and retired around 1982, so you can check the two-letter 'shimano date code' on the web and determine if your positron is definitely pre-'80.
usually, original shimano parts are the same age as the bike, +/- 1 year.
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Society
Serial number would indicate Perth 1944, with the likely addition of the SA hub at a later date. Pics?
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyI think its worth $50 - $150.
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation Society

Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyIt's in a box in my dads garage at the moment, pretty much where it's been since 1970, but will hopefully get better pics next visit...
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyG'Day Rollin,
That's one beautiful Five Star. I'm guessing 22 1/2 inch seat bar. Any chance of some more history on it? Was it built in Melbourne, What club your Dad rode for, etc. Cheers a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyThanks, it was Sydney built.
He bought it in 1970 from a guy who had matching 5 stars, one road and one track. He never road it once..

That looks fantastic When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments- Elizabeth West.
Re: Malvern Star Appreciation SocietyHi guys, thanks for this thread! I took my fathers Double XX into a bike store to get some advice on restoration and they said it wasn't worth restoring. Apparently it needs a new chain/cassette/chain rings, bearings, front axle, brake levers, pads and cable set and seat. I do want to give it a shot because my Dad is not well but this is new to me and don't know where to begin to source appropriate parts or second hand alternatives. Major learning curve.. Any advice heaps appreciated!
