I'm in, doing the Raid this year for something different. Plan to make it a week of hard rides instead going easy leading up to the Classic, should be good. One of my favourite weeks of the year.

The raid looks like a fun ride.

So how's everyone's training going? I've been doing a few long hills and repeats in the last couple of weeks, and did a full temperature test on Sunday (42c) climbing Barrengarry Mt - was slow but it didn't kill me :)

Hi everyone, I didn't learn from my mistake last year, and have left my run too late for accom. If anyone on this thread knows someone who cancels their accom, a pm or a msg on here would really help me out :)

Either way, I'll be going on the ride - but hoping to get accom closer than an hour away from the start line.

On another topic, training rides will be a bit light on.. best chance I had was last Saturday, 149km including 4 times up Mt Dandenong, about 3500m climbing. Hoping for one more similar ride on one of the weekends in between, and that will be it!

Looking forward to testing myself none the less!

Crikey, if that's light on, I'm positively in negative territory.

What ride are you doing ?

hey MichaelB, I'm having a crack at the 200km.
by 'light on' I was more meaning that I won't have a chance to do too many more long rides before the Alpine Classic. I suppose my ideal would have been to do another 2 like the one I mentioned, as well as perhaps a flatter ride - trying to get approx 8-10hrs in the saddle on one ride.
I'm definitely not sophisticated in my 'training', but am probably blessed with a little bit of base fitness, so hoping to get through ok!

Which ride are you doing?

I'm doing the 140km for the first time.

My runup has been hampered by some minor health issues in Nov/Dec (colds and torn calf muscle) and house reno's that are eating up time, but i should be OK.

Getting up there Tue afternoon so have some time to scope out the actual rides and see them at least once or twice before the big day.

Hopefully it won't be too hot on the day.

nice, hope you enjoy the ride! I certainly did last year (130km), and can't wait for this one.
Would be great to get there (like you are) for a look before the day, make the most of it!

See you out there on Aus Day weekend!

I had a little co-incidence this morning. I was out on a training ride and slowly overhauled another rider. I'd never met him before, total stranger, but I rode along with him for a while, just chatting.

At an intersection I said, "Well, I'll peel off here."

- "Going up the mountain?"

"Yep, gotta get fit for the Alpine Classic."

- "Which one are you doing?"

"The 250."

- "Me too, which start?"

"4:00 a.m."

- "Me too, see you there."

Last training ride today, 171km and 4200m of climbing. It wasn't easy, but am now feeling a bit more confident about the 200k in a couple weeks.
Looking fwd to seeing a few of you in bright!

Not easy? Er, no. In fact, probably harder than the event you are training for :)

On Saturday, I did 200 km with 2900 metres of climbing. I think it will be enough - I hope so!

If the race took less than 1 hr 8 min then, yes, you are

You are all doing better than me.

Doing my best between work, finishing reno's and family.

Should be alright on the day :D

I hope :o

Don't worry Michael, that's pretty normal, makes the beer at the Brewery taste good. It will be much cooler up the hills! :D

Not necessarily. I rode up Mt Buffalo last Friday 11th, and it reached 39°C in Bright, and didn't drop below the low 30s at the summit of Mt Buffalo. On the bright side (excuse my little pun), there is a waterfall on the left hand side of the road a bit more than halfway up (I think) which contains beautifully cold water, and I recommend dunking your head under it :D , because it makes the next several km much more bearable.

I'll be in Bright this coming Friday, psyching myself up for the ACE 250, and hoping it isn't too hot (or they'll invoke the extreme heat policy).

Was never a beer person that much, more a wine and proper single malt man myself.

However, I'll stick with the normal stuff :D

Just praying for not quite so hot weather ..

Really looking fwd to the challenge of a 20+km climb.

I think

Apparently there is a bush fire burning out of control north of Harrietville.

Current advice is
Advice
HARRIETVILLE
Effective: 22/01/13 7:17 PM
Expires: 23/01/13 7:00 AM
Incident Information:
Department of Sustainability and Environment advise that there is fire activity in the HARRIETVILLE area.

This bushfire is out of control.
This message applies to the towns of Dunphys Hill, Germantown, Freeburgh, Mount Beauty, Porepunkah, Salt Log, Tawonga, Tawonga South, Wandiligong, Flourbag, Nelse, Bogong, Bright, Buckland Junction, Loch Glen, Dinner Plain, Brookside.
The Great Alpine road is closed between Harrietville and Hotham Heights.
Smoke may be visible from nearby communities and roads.
Bushwalkers and other forest users are advised to avoid walking tracks in the Alpine National Park, east of Harrietville.
The CFA is the place to go for more info. I'm reliably informed that AAC organisers are monitoring the situation.

I'm up in Bright now. The sound of choppers passing overhead has been off-putting this afternoon and the crappy CFA app is useless at giving any information. But the wind direction is blowing the fire away from Bright - not towards.
You've got to feel sorry for both the locals impacted and the fire fighters - it has been hot and windy all day.

The Alpine hwy is closed beyond Harrietville. The fire is about 700 ha. Satellite imaging has shown various 'hot spots' around the area. Winds are forecast to pick up on Thursday from the North. Possible lightning on Friday and Saturday. Hope rain comes with it because dry lightning can start fires all over the place. As you can imagine, CFA firefighters are on alert.

Cross everything and good luck for the Audax.
