Just looking at the weather back in the UK, found this picture, do you think he has thumb tacks in there? I used to use them on my old RC car for iced pond racing 8)

Nah, riding in fresh snow is not too bad... a bit like riding through sand. It's when the snow has been compacted down into ice that the spikes are needed

Last August at Charlottes Pass my wife saw someone riding along the ridge opposite the resort, so you don't have to be overseas to do it.
