2013 Defy 1 frame size advice

Postby zzkazu » Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:07 am

Decided on a 2013 Defy 1 for my road bike that is going to be used mainly for commuting to work and back, basically 120km a week. My LBS is recommending a M for me as my arms are nearly locked on a M/L. However when I rode the M it seemed to be more upright than I expected (noting this is my first rode bike coming from a MTB). Although when I tried a M/L Defy 2 (The LBS didn't have a Defy 1 in M/L) and it didn't feel as good and I'm, not sure if this was more about the running gear.

looking at the Giant sizing chart I'm on the cusp of a M/L. Question is should I err on larger size frame or stay with a M

I'm 178cm in height with a 80cm inseam.

thanks for any advice

The Defy is very upright, roadie/tourer. There would be little difference in the frames, maybe a couple of cms.

The Defy 1 vs Defy 2 would be same ride in same size, you would need to be pretty switched and doing a serious ride to pick the difference in groupset/wheels.

Test them more if you are not sure, do not rush in. Personally if i had to pick a slightly larger or slightly smaller frame I would go slightly larger. Obviously if in doubt I would get a full fit.

Me too .... go with the M.

The Defy geometry is very adaptable, but if you choose M/L there is 2cm extra in the head tube you can never get rid of and that will mean you will always be more upright than on the M.

thanks for the advice.. little bid confused isn't the M/L longer meaning I would be less upright.

Getting a fitting on Monday but had assumed the frame size would be already chosen..

I think it’s your reach to the bars that should be the focus, as this is what determines how comfy you will be for the duration on the bike.

I am 177cm 80cm inseam and recently tested a defy advanced 0 in the Medium and it was perfect for me.

I currently have a bike thats too big for me, (56.5cm top tube), bought it when I knew nothing, and the LBS jut sold me what they had on the floor.

Choosing a frame on the larger side has the disadvantage of not being to customise the fit as much imo. Its far easier to replace / extend items to create a better fit with a frame thats just a Tad under size.

Ok - that makes sense, sounds like its a M with fitting.

Thanks for all the advice

Your leg length won't change so the seat will be lower relative to the overall taller front end on a bigger frame and you will be sitting up in the headwind like a spinakker.

OTOH, I have a friend who rides an M but has short legs (relative to his upper body) so his seat is lower and he has to sit a bit more upright because of that. As he adapts gradually to the road bike position he has been able to 1) flip the stem, and 2) remove one, then a second, of the steerer tube spacers to improve his position.

At 178 and 80, you are probably a more balanced body shape than him so no need to get a larger frame to accommodate longer arms/reach.

I think....

I have had my 2013 defy 1 for about 6 months now. Commute to work (15km) as well as some larger 50km rides on weekends. It is an awesome road bike. I am 6'3 and 80kg, and the Large frame fits great. I'd say go with a M, but just go try both sizes and see.

I'm almost the same height as you, I'd be buying the M if it was for myself with a 110mm stem.

look at another brand.
I don't fit Giant Defy's very well.
I fit Avanti Cadents really well.
Cervelo r3's love me with an upturned stem.
BH Prima's seem to fit me really nicely too, not so much the Speedrom.
And the only Pinarello I have ever ridden was too long @55cm but the position felt really good, just a smidge too long on reach. a shorter stem would have solved that.

Repeat try another brand.

Am i reading this correctly?...You don't fit on a Giant Defy, so the OP should try something else?

Don't say that I just picked it up, the LBS bid a fitting and said it was the size for me. What I have worked out is that I had my MTB seat was set way too high and this most likely has contributed to my feeling whilst riding these bikes.

Only rode it 8 km today and the setup is totally different from what I'm use to and I hope to get use to it soon...
