Devastated. Is there anything we can do?

Sydney Cyclist forum is saying they will turn off life support today.

Worst news ever, very sobering.

I heard the news while chatting to a couple of audax riders on my ride this morning. Never met the guy but feel shattered to hear he won't make it. Deepest condolences to his friends and family.

+1, to think he or she just drove off, Unbelievable unfortunately they often do just take off, is due to fear or waht :? It will be much worse for the person when they are caught and I hope they catch them very soon

Sadly I think the window has passed where the driver might turn themselves in, it takes only a few days for most drugs to be out of your system or get legal advice.

Think Eugene McGee. Except this time we don't know who the Eugene McGee is.

I am more angry than sad because this criminal may very well get away with killing a stand-up guy. Just devastated for the family, I really need to reconsider a few of my rides, and commuting in the dark.

Footage of the bike in the aftermath clearly showed the lights still on and very bright. Spoke to a guy this morning who rode with Ron and he confirmed that Ron used good lights.

Hopefully a ghost bike can be installed near the site as a reminder to motorists to slow down and to everyone that some low integrity 'person' is hiding out among us.

That's awful news. :( I hope the friends and family can find some strength in this difficult time.

Where is the media outrage over this? The government should be taking a much bigger stand on this too. How can anyone hit a bike rider and then just drive away? It is unspeakably low.

Tragic outcome. There's a suggestion on Sydney Cyclist that no car was
involved. Condolences to the family and friends - and a sobering reminder
for all of us to take care out there.

Reading this & I'm feeling a bit the same as yesterday as a big group of us rode past the site of the ghost rider memorial at Port Beach (Fremantle, Perth) This is where Tim Anderson was dragged quite some distance under the car of a drunk driver who fled the scene and was apprehended later on. I participated in the inaugural 'Tim's Ride' last November and the ceremony at the memorial site had a big impact on me.

I'm very sad, it gives me a lump in my throat and a tear or 2 and it does make you think the thing through. I hope he didn't suffer too much in the final moments. Condolences to his family who have a life time to deal with it.

Bob's analysis is sensible on that thread and with his years of being involved in cycling infrastructure, I tend to believe his interpretation. I guess it goes to show how both the cycling and non-cycling communities can all misplace the blame. Ride safe!

Thanks for the link Wombat/Sogood. I feel marginally better in humanity after reading that it probably isn't a hit and run. It's still terribly tragic but it removes the callous element. I feel awful for his family who would be devastated.

Yes, looking back at the ABC news report, there seems to be no damage to wheels or frame of the bike, like you would expect from a motor vehicle impact.

If so, just very sad for the family, to lose someone through such a misadventure.

This was posted on the Audax Google group by Howard and Bec.
It is with immense sadness that I inform you that Ron Gehring passed away on Saturday evening.

Ron was cycling home alone after an evening ride with friends on Wednesday when an accident occurred.

Ron sustained serious head injuries and never regained consciousness.

He died in peace, surrounded by his beautifully devoted family, friends and work colleagues.

Generous in death as he was in life; eight people's lives have been improved and possibly saved by his organ donations.

Ron will be repatriated to the USA, but he will be remembered by all of those people whose lives he touched.

Farewell good friend, we'll miss you.

My thoughts are with Ron's family.

A wonderful offering midst the sadness.
