Zipp 188 Hub cassette damage
Postby bengo » Sat Jan 19, 2013 12:24 pm
I sent an email to Zipp whom say that there is no solution except going to sram, that it was okay. Problem is too much noise
Anyone got a solution

Post a picture. Unless its chewed all the way through do the lockring up to 40Nm and it should be fine. If it is all the way through, just order a new freehub from your LBS.bengo wrote:I have zipp 101 wheels with ultegra group set. Noise was coming from the rear cassette, on inspection i notice the rear cassette was loose. I took the cogs off and notice the aluminum hub cassette spline was notched badly creating movement with the cogs.

This is exactly why you should use a torque wrench when doing up cassette lockrings.

What happened to your 188 hub?Dr_Mutley wrote:Zipp 188 hubs are terrible anyway. U could spend $70 to $100 on a new free hub body (easy to change), or lace in a good hub

I've destroyed two 188 hubs by ripping the spokes away from the flange on the drive side. Both times this resulted in the rim taking big gouges out of the chain stay. Even when 188 hubs are adjusted up well (bearing preload) the lateral deflection from the hubs are nothing short of terrible as well... Just my opinion however...Baldy wrote:What happened to your 188 hub?Dr_Mutley wrote:Zipp 188 hubs are terrible anyway. If u put enough watts thru the back wheel with the pads set close u will see some rubbing at some point...

The Zipp 188 hub flanges were too thin. I believe the newer models have thicker flanges.Baldy wrote:Damn, well I can only hope I don't have that problem I guess. Are you a big guy? Being light-ish might help me. There is not much room between the fat chainstays on my Tarmac so it would not take much. I run the pads real close and have no rubbing. Or are you talking about some other kind of flex? I have no idea what lateral deflection from the hub means!

Yeah correct... Version 2 of the 188 hubs have meatier flanges, due to the failure rate of the V1 188s. Both my replacement wheelsets look thicker in the flange, but I'm done with zipp. I'm not taking any chances with damaging my new frame by using their hubs.biker jk wrote:The Zipp 188 hub flanges were too thin.
