Is rim tape position causing punctures?

Postby Warnesy » Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:59 am

LBS fixed a spoke, now getting a few flats, even ones where overnight tube goes down for no reason. Looked at rim just now and I'm not sure if rim tape is sitting right. Grateful for your views.

Absolutely. It is not "sitting right". Each spoke hole needs to be well covered - and there should not be
a gap in the tape at the spoke in the last photo. It's never going to sit right elsewhere though with a gap like
that. What happened to the spoke that belongs there ? Did you remove it.

If not, I wouldn't be going back to an LBS that left the rim tape like that - except for a fix under warranty.
That's unprofessional work.

Cheers

Thanks that's what I thought. This was an LBS job because I wasn't comfortable doing the spoke myself.

I'll go back and politely ask them to fix it.

Methinks that was the valve hole Wombat, it looks like a Schraeder to me.

Agree with everything else, poor workmanship. Send it back.

Also the valve hole normally has rim tape over it, just with a hole in the rim tape as well
Time for a different LBS if it does such a job in my opinion.

Took it back, they were rather apologetic and gave me two new tubes

That would have definitely caused a puncture. They used tape that was too thin. It comes in different widths.

I know because I've had exactly the same issue.

Yep looks to thin to me

Is that a cut down 700c rim tape in a 26" mountain bike rim by any chance?

I have the same rim tape, it has a hole in it for the valve and you have to glue the over lap not cut it at the valve
