Sub $1,000 Wheelset
Postby 4xsama » Sat Jan 19, 2013 8:30 pm
I have a Sempre (2012) and am looking to upgrade the wheelset (don't tell the missus).
Coming in at a luxurious 105kg I am well aware of the missus (autospell put that in-thought it a bit funny but meant ISSUES) with wheel robustness but literally hate the sound of my Reparto Corsa hub and want to be shot of it. I also feel the wheels flex a bit compared to the ones on my fixy. My old Gary Fisher Sugar 1 has a DT Swiss hub which sounds the goods, hooked up a treat and felt really solid.
What I want is a wheel set I can get for sub $1,000, handles my current weight, is good for a weekly minimum of 100 ks and also handles a work commute/extended ride home. I used to love hills on my MTB and am looking to loose some kg's and get busy in the hills again.
What is a good wheelset for climbing and commuting and has a decent quality hub (racket preferred) and comes in at sub $1,000.
Cheers

- highly underrated and overlooked. 1652grams $400
Custom Build
- DT240s hubs, Kinlin270 or 300 rims, 24/28 Sapim CXray spokes, brass nipples....1540 grams $800 for components, $150 for build = $950
(~$550 with ultegra hubs, ~$750 with DuraAce)
IMHO, a sub 1500 gram, sub 24:28 wheelset will not endure your weight. Rethink the importance of light wheel weight and your 105kg when hurtling down a hill at 70+kg.
I've seen a low km Fulcrum Racing 3 and Dura Ace C24 break spokes already this year.
