So what's the thoughts on 400km/day for 35 days?
Mate is attempting to do just the one lap around Aus (14,000km) in 35 days to break the unofficial record - and to raise money for a good cause. I'm tagging along in support and will ride the odd 100k

I've done 300km two days in a row once (in Africa on mountain bikes), the thought of 400 makes me sick.

Anyone attempted similar crazy stuff, particularly the consecutive days?

I could do it (the 400km two days in a row)... but I'd probably quit cycling afterwards. There is nothing "fun" about that kind of effort. I imagine the guy will be hooked up to an IV every night after a couple days, if not while he's on the bike

Reading Dave Alley's blog was an eye opener, that's for sure. Riding at 27-30kmh for 15 hours day after day for a month is very impressive but doesn't sound that fun to me. Good luck to your friend though, hope he does well.

Yeah I agree it doesn't sound fun at all - in fact a big driver behind me tagging along is to see him in pain. This is clearly not something one does for fun.
When we rode through Africa, 200km/day at 28kmh, we still had rest days (27 riding days across 5 weeks), and Reid just seemed to lap it up (lack of sleep biggest issue, and good quality food).

And Reid (mate cycling) has been in contact with Dave Alley I understand.

We are starting to make contact with cycle clubs across the country to see if we can have any interest in clubs joining us for sections on particular days.

Meh, wake me if he gets close to 252 days straight the record by an Australian for cycling in one year is 1937 100,837 km set by Ossie Nicholson in 1934 - yep that is 400 km for 252 days or an average of 276 km per day for an entire year.

Of course if he can get that done, I will cheer him on as he goes for Tommy Goodwin's all time record - 120,805 km in 1939, an average of 330 km per day. Even at 400km per day it would still take 302 days.

In May 1940 after 500 days' riding he secured the 100,000-mile (160,000 km) record as well. Godwin dismounted and spent weeks learning how to walk before going to war in the RAF.

THAT is a man ready to serve his country.... although I'm not sure giving up your ability to walk is something you should be doing to ride a bike.

There is a discussion now taking place at BROL on a ROAM style ride across Australia. They are looking at an average of 200 km per day.

In general, my planning would be for daily legs of 200 km on average, meaning to ride between 150 to 280 km every day with a few rest days built in. That way, Perth to Brisbane should be doable in about 23 days which would mean a four week stay in Australia.
