Beginner all rounder bike needed <$500-550

Hi,

I'm looking for a mountain bike to ride to work, do casual rides with the girlfriend for fitness.

What sort of brands should I be looking at, and what type of bikes are going to last.

I'm 6'2 and weight 100kgs so its got to be able o withstand that weight and I will be taking it on some trails on occasion too. Nothing to out of control, thought just fire trails and through the national park kind of thing.

From searching the many threads on here about this topic. The Giant Boulder, Cell bikes or KHS bikes seem to be the go??

I live in Lane Cove so any bike shops around me that offer a good price would the good too!

Any advice would be great.

My cousin who rides downhill bikes recommended these to me over the cell bikes as he was of the opinion they have better gear

at 6"2' you probably could ride a large. Already sold out of XL's anyway.

I bought that when i was too scared to ride on roads but after riding it for a couple of months i sucked it up and got a road bike and got out on the roads.Nothing wrong with the bike i just bought the wrong type of bike for the riding i was planning on doing and the lbs i bought it from should have put me on something more road friendly and i didn't know any better before but i have a lot more knowledge on bicycles now and also do most of my repairs myself.

Maybe you would be better off with a hybrid bike then it should be fine for light trails and probably lighter than a mountain bike. That giant boulder i had would probably have been 15-16kg i reckon and it was hard work riding that in a headwind.

Hybrid bike, any recommendations? If I was to do do a trail it would be very light not doing heavy runs through mud and stuff in the middle of the blue mountains.

Look on bikeexchange.com.au and set the filters to new,hybrid,frame size,max price you want to spend and state you are in and there are quite a few options there for $500-$600 dollars, this is one here giant cypress 2 2012 for $500



I reccommend getting brands like apollo,giant,scott etc something from one of the bigger companies with a decent frame warranty.

I don't like that saddle too much it seems too big soft and springy but you might like it.

Cheap suspension forks are useless and so are cheap suspension seat posts. IMHO

A guy at work just msged me and told me to look at Reid cycles. I haven't seen much of a write up here about them, and they are a lot cheaper than the other mentioned bikes.

I'm thinking this could be a goer as obviously their gear isnt as good, but because its cheap if I get bitten by the bug it wont sting the hip pocket when I want to upgrade

It seems that people either love Reid or hate them! I have no idea what they are like but when I was looking at my first roadie I considered the same kind of options. A cheap (maybe second hand) bike to give me a taste of road riding and if I loved it I could upgrade etc etc. People put me off saying that a cheap bike wont give you the true feeling of road riding blah blah blah....I saw LOADS of guys selling their ALU roadies to upgrade and I wish I'd looked into that further, there were some serious bargains around!

IF you get a reid bike shipped to you they are nearly always poorly assembled from the factory and the rims they use on their cheap bikes are very wobbly and poor quality. Unless the op lives in a state where there is a reid cycles store then it may be worth it but in my experience sticking to a better known brand from a lbs is going to be much better.After all we are only talking about $500 here and im sure the op would rather spend the extra $100 to $150 on a brand with a better reputation.

I just realised I'm about 5 minutes from the LBS 99bikes in Artarmon.

They have a massive range of hybrids in the $500 range, not sure what the club price is but I'm sure I can get that if I ask for it.

Norco Indie, Mongoose Assphalt (shocking name) and Merida Speeder are all worth a look. Stay away from any variants of any cheaper hybrid that have what appears to be a suspension fork - it'll only make you fail.
