Shimano shadow good for local conditions?
Postby adaml » Wed Jan 23, 2013 2:41 pm
It might be a moot question, given that they're increasingly universal, but how well do shadow- type derailers suit Australian trails? I know the advantages, but when they first came out, I remember some speculating that tucking the rd closer to the wheel would make it more vulnerable to sticks etc. Did there worries amount to anything?

Simple answer is yes. They still work as effectively (and get destroyed as frequently) as any typical RD.
The new Shadow Plus variants are a step up given they seriously limit chain slap. Mind you...so do the Series 2 clutched RDs from SRAM.

Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Have just changed my Deore LX to XT Shadow and the difference in positioning is quite amazing, much better cable routing, no loops hanging out. Wouldn't hesitate to put them use them
