bicycles.net.au forum - Your suggestions here

Postby AUbicycles » Fri Dec 29, 2006 6:25 pm

Hello

The old post /original post has now been retired and to freshen up suggestions I have started this new post..

First up, in the old post there were a number of suggestions, these are open for discussion here, so if there is something you really want, lets hear the arguments.

Current Items
- Trading or buy / sell / swap forum
- Exercise / training forum
- Charity / fun ride forum
- Repairs / Maintenance forum
- "Report Post" for spam Although Europa, myself and the other moderaters usually react quite quickly to spam or dubious posts

Not for discussion
- Sorry, no signatures, it has to do with preventing spammers and although its good fun, we are doing well enough without it and limiting the spam on the site.

New Items
- I am interesting in adding some banners to the side of the forum above / below the google advertising.
Advertising covers the cost of ever increasing site traffic (well over 10 Gig / month and increasing) more info here
- Ideas for distributing the bicycles.net.au stickers which promote this forum
- Other ideas to promote the forum
- More new ideas?

Look forward to the discussion.

Cheers
Christopher

I am aware of many people migrating from phpbb to smf (simple machines forum). I guess I must have better features (anti-spam/pics etc.)

May want to check it out.

I'd say this is the right thread to ask if not sorry in advance....
In another forum I frequent and go into the specific sections at each Title thread there is a tick to show I have posted in the thread.
I find this very useful and time saving.

If this has been suggested before sorry.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for both of the posts. phpbb is working quite wel, spam is an issue however the system has been adapted to reduce spam as much as possible without affecting too many 'real' visitors and members. The Mods also do a great job of removing spam very quickly.

Regarding the check box, it sounds like a simple modification.. I will have to have a look at it. At the moment hot topics and new topics are signified with orange icons and in addition you can choose to track a post (there is a checkbox).

Cheers

Unless I am blind and can't see it, is there a way to mark all threads as read and return to the front page? if not that would be a handy addition, maybe under the 3 on the top about viewing new posts etc.

You can do that in each individual forum, but as far as I can see, not for all forums at once. It's at top right when you're in a forum.

Edit: just had a look again after I posted. Yes you can, it's at bottom left on the main forums page.

Dunno if this is the 'puters I'm using, me or the SW.

If I lose the modem or get any of the myriad problems that M$ DOS, pictorial display edition  can throw up at any time, I lose the flags showing new posts on a thread when I log back on, can I fix this locally, by admin using PHBB or whatever?

Maybe I should just stop whining and get on with it?

Is 404 the most annoying number ever devised?

I've seen (and used extensively) a search feature in a motorcycle forum I was visiting, and have really missed not having that feature on these forums... It's a search option that can limit your keyword search to just the thread titles, instead of finding the keyword anywhere in the post.

If the keyword of the subject you're searching for is even slightly common, the current search feature will return hundreds of results. If you're able to search just the titles, it can return the threads specifically about your subject, without hundreds of fairly random posts.

I don't know if this forums software has this search option available, or if the admin/moderators are able to modify it to include this option, but it would be really helpful!! :D

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Will have to have a look and see what the options are... RSS feeds have also been requested.

Cheers
