Which Colnago ?

Hi all, I'm new to bike building and have just bought a frame which I is suppose to be a Colnago. Can anyone identify it ? Also some details on what period Campagnolo components would suit the frame would be appreciated.

Cheers Peter, I've had more advice listing reasons why it's not a Colnago. A little confused now. Any features make you think it's 70's?

I'm no expert but the external routing of the rear brake cable and the gear cables routed over the bottom bracket make it look older to me.
At first glance the clover leaf cut out in the bottom bracket looks pretty definitive.
But seriously I'm no expert.

Yeah, the cable on the top of the BB and the three cable brackets on the TT makes people suspicious that its not real. Apparently there should be an oval cut out on the down tube lug as well. Anyone else with some advice?

I'm reserving my judgement as to whether the frame is a genuine Colnago or not. The three cable guides on top of the top tube is questionable. Most Colnago's I've seen only have 2 cable guides. The RH rear dropout has 2 small holes for a Campy chain hanger. These dropouts were first made in 1978. I have seen a Greg Softly owned Colnago from 1978 with a similar rear dropout and 'over the top' bottom bracket gear cable guides but it had 2 brake cable guides. It is difficult to see his bike's seat stay caps but it looks like his bike doesn't have engraved "COLNAGO" on the caps - like yours. A lot of Colago Super's had "COLNAGO" stamped into the RH rear fork - yours doesn't - but Greg Softly's bike doesn't either.

The decal set on your bike are the same as a cheap copy available in the 80's. Many fake Colnago's had this decal set.

The bottom bracket cutout could be faked but it does look very even and factory made. It is a bit different to the cutouts I am used to seeing.

Greg Softly runs 'Cyclemondo' which produces great reproduction decal sets. If you access his website have a look at the 'links' to access photo's of his extensive bike collection. He has many Colnago's.

Is it real??? I'd like to see a few more photos. I would like to see if the lugs had any 'ace of clubs' cutouts. I would expect to see a club cutout on the bottom lug on the headset.

Hi, your bike is not a Colnago, the BB cutout is not the colnago clover leaf. Your bike is a Cornelo. Cornelo bikes have cutouts which have a line and distinct circles, where as colnagos don't. This is all my opinion of course! Cheers

Wow.. interesting. I'd have to agree with the Cornelo assessment, from the few other example pics floating around the net.

Wonder if they were ever sold here? I'm guessing it might have been a private import to Australia originally. Most of their few references are more central European web pages.

The brand was named after the son Cornelo, the "lo" to express an Italian flair.

I have swung to the Cornelo camp. I found this head tube decal that shows the club used by Cornelo.



My only problem now is that I can't find an image showing the same clover leaf 'club' cutout lugs on a Cornelo. I have only been able to find images of later model bikes with a different lug cutout. I wouldn't be surprised if Colnago stopped Cornelo using the 'club' cutouts on their lugs because they were too close to the Colnago 'club' lugs.

This is the typical Cornelo lug cutout I found on a few Cornelo bikes. I guess that this cutout is a later version.

Interestingly, this bike has a replacement Colnago front fork.
