Gates belt drive - ShimanoSG-700Alfine compatibility?
Postby polydexta » Fri Jan 25, 2013 11:28 am
Does anyone know if a Gates belt drive setup can be used to drive the Shimano Alfine 700 or the Rohloff 14 speed?
Thanks
Thanks

Some discussion from the Thorn Forum about this, and more specifically a response from a manufacturer. It seems that with a Rohloff, to retain their very valuable worldwide warranty, you'd need the conversion to be done by Rohloff and using a frame that would meet their specs for rigidity.
Probably cheaper and easier to get a bike that is already designed for it. There are such, but most are sold out of Europe and will cost $$$$.

Retrofitting to the Alfine 11 I know little about, but it may be an easier task

Fitting a belt drive to an Alfine 8 or 11 is reported to be fairly straight forward.
A Di2 (electronic shifting) Alfine is much more problematic, although apparently it is possible, at least if you have access to a machine shop.

Agree with il padrone, working with a frame designed for a carbon drive will save time and money.

Hi polydexta,
This company seems to have some clues on installation.

Yes straight fit, 3 spline, fits on as you would with a normal chained sprocket.

St Kilda Cycles built my touring bike up with a Rohloff and Gates Belt Drive. It's a modified Charge Duster. I love it. I'd get the Center Trak if I were doing it again, but the extra 2mm width of the belt might cause problems on a modified frame.
