Re: The revival of the penny farthingI was talking to Alan Sumner today,(very Rare chance) PF builder and Racer still at his shop, about getting some wheels rebuilt for my 1956 Healing, Sorry he said I'm off to Tassie for the races, can't help ya till Feb'. Really enjoyed the chat with him, so many topics to cover, from,
" I used to be a distributor for Healing" to the 50's downturn through to the cycling revival, bmx, "kids had their bikes all over the path they did" and "this bloke came up the path at such a rate and he wasn't even pedaling" (electric) I look forward to getting back to the shop with my wheels. And what a shop it is, you CANNOT go anywhere in the shop without stepping on some sort of shop stock, it is filled full of hardware and cycling stuff from decades past and even Velocity wheels. http://www.evandalevillagefair.com/index.php/race-results/results-archive.html Fight till the end n never give up. Re: The revival of the penny farthing
Great pic , these blokes are really competing. I would not like to roll a tyre at that height off the road either.
Re: The revival of the penny farthingthe only issue was when a mouse ran from one of the hay bales and under a rear wheel, which caused the rear wheel to slide, with the rider over the bale into a spectator... eek

Re: The revival of the penny farthing
.... I heard it was someone's mother ... double eek. Apparently she was compensated by getting one of the winner's medal. Total gentleman. ..... 15km short of a cardiac arrest.

Re: The revival of the penny farthingThey should have a class where you have to wear period garb too - lycra just looks wrong on a penny farthing!
Re: The revival of the penny farthingWhere can you try or even buy a Penny Farthing ?
Looks really scary but fun as well...... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Re: The revival of the penny farthing
Surely tweed and top/bowler hats should be mandatory ? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Re: The revival of the penny farthing
Jeez, look at the teeth on that guy ! He could eat an apple through a tennis racket ! love the pic though, very cool !
Re: The revival of the penny farthingno lycra here, and he was in a class of his own
![]() The womens race, most took it seriously, Bell did not. ![]()

Re: The revival of the penny farthingThat's very cool, totally agree Anyone wearing Lycra on a pf should be disqualified or slapped..
Re: The revival of the penny farthingWhen you build the penny yourself, you can wear what you damn well please.

Re: The revival of the penny farthingLove the side saddle but jeez she'd have to have good balance. And the brake levers on the other one just makes that bike a perfect commuter.
But how did the unicyclist get up onto his one?
Re: The revival of the penny farthing
with a little help from his friends to start, then he did a full lap on the monster unicycle. ![]()
Bell raced side-saddle, and she also was standing on the seat, etc (no photos as I was in disbelief) during a parade lap.
Re: The revival of the penny farthing
Totally disagree, Lycra on a pf is appropriate - provided the pf is carbon fibre I was going to buy a fast, stylish bike, but I looked in the mirror & thought "you're not fooling anyone, you know"
Re: The revival of the penny farthing... and when you have an aero rim
Thanks. I just spat my dinner over my monitor and keyboard. "People have a right to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Evidence must be located, not created, and opinions not backed by evidence cannot be given much weight." -- James W Loewen

Re: The revival of the penny farthing
Plenty of room for a really deep dish rim I was going to buy a fast, stylish bike, but I looked in the mirror & thought "you're not fooling anyone, you know"
Re: The revival of the penny farthingAmateurs. Lycra...and they aren't even clipped in. Where's the roadie pedals?
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle
