Tool free freewheel removal

Postby Mulger bill » Sat Jan 26, 2013 12:31 pm

My Fixed gear bike has the standard flip flop hub with a spin on freewheel on the redundant side, neither of my pin wrenches will get enough grip to get it off so I'm looking for non LBS suggestions that don't involve destroying it, any ideas?

Thanks
Shaun

The pin holes are usually for disassembling the freewheel ratchet from the main body.
Most freewheels I've seen need some sort of socket or wrench adapter.

+1. If it's been used, it's quite possibly been wound on in a big way. I'd get the right freewheel remover ($cheap on ebay). The force involved in getting one off with the right tool is such that I'd be pretty nervous about improvising.

.... although having said what I just did above....

In musing about yet another ( :roll: ) project I was looking at some of the freewheel teeth counts availble. I found this "Excess" brand from QBP in the states;

Harris Cyclery says they just use a regular 4 prong remover, but that doesn't seem match to the pictures. ? Hmmm......

I reckon they just photographed the other side for some reason. Looks better without the four big slots maybe?

Could be I guess. Hmm :? Or maybe the branding was on the wrong side for the pic? They seem to be available in a good range compared to some (upto 22 teeth) and quality reports seem consistent.

Same as mine. I take it to the LBS, cause I don't have that removal tool. I think its a hybrid of a couple, so you can use more than one tool to remove it.

Came on the bike for me Kym. Once I get it off it's yours for postage costs if you really want it. I'm never freewheeling on a 1x1 again, Fixed is awesome!

Cheers

That's mighty neighbourly of you Shaun. I'd be interested - but no rush. What tooth count is it?
This project concept is about 3rd or 4th in line at present and in the early 'parts sniffing' stage.

Fixed IS fun... but I need a better sized frame than what I am riding atm.

It's a 16t Kym, used for about 5.5 hrs over about a week before I flipped the rear hub and became unbroken  I'm hoping that once I do pull the thing off I'll find a lockring thread so I can fit a 17t track cog for when I'm feeling lazy :D

I have a couple like this that I took off as I wanted to use a different no of teeth than what was supplied.
I found the standard 'singlespeed' four pin remover shown higher up in the thread got them off with no drama
Cheers
