Date of manufacture of Repco Superlite and Peugeot

Postby Davo_Termy » Mon Jan 28, 2013 9:03 pm

Hello everyone, I'm Dave and I'm hoping someone knows about the following serial numbers for age of bike: Repco Superlite GG811162 K7, it has a Shimano FD-Z202 front derailler which is in the 1984-88 era, Sugino MP cranks VP2 854 Sugino Japan 7 170, it's green and white with 4130 cro-mo Giant main tubes. The other bike is a Peugeot Avoriaz Y80460265B, French Racing Blue with Carbolite frame. Thanks very much!

Davo,

I don't know anything about the bike brands, but you can narrow the Shimano components down to a month and year (assuming they are post-1976). Just google 'dating shimano components' and you'll find a couple of sites that explain the date stamps. This will give you a closer guide on the bike's date of manufacture.

Based on the serial number the Peugeot is a 1988, however because Peugeot's are French and the French being .... French that is really plus or minus several years. Pictures would help date it but dating Peugeots is part art and part science so don't expect a definitive answer.
It would not be at all strange if history came to the conclusion that the perfection of the bicycle was the greatest achievement of the nineteenth century.

+1 - the best (only?) chance you have of accurately dating a peugeot within reason is by the components, and even then you need to know for certain they are the originals.

The decals of the Peugeot are consistent with it being a very late 1980's model. The attached link is to a heap of Peugeot catalogues from the 1880s right through to 1989 :D . If you look through them you stand a reasonable chance of finding your bike - good luck.

Hi guys, what sort of Superlites have you owned? Have you owned any Peugeots? It doesn't appear that Repco make road bikes anymore, do you know why?

Peugeots (mine) - 1972 PR10, 1986 PGN 12, 196? child's bicycle (long-term project),

Peugeots (Son) - 1989 Izoard, 1989 Back Rock

Repco Olympic 12 (mine)
