This is not far from my place. Anyone on the wrong side of the road coming down here is right in the LH wheel track of a car coming up the hill. What you cant see is the 400+m of downhill to reach this point, with a nice sweeping right as you drop down to this sharp left. A sad accident. Jim MY RIDES: My Velospace Profile

Re: 2013 Cycling Fatalities
Maybe its different down there, but up here in the progressive land of qld (......) cyclists aren't allowed on motorways. Which is a pretty good idea... ![]()
Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesThe M4 has a dedicated cycle way along it - the breakdown lane! It is signposted as such and there are warnings for cyclists to cross the on ramps and exits carefully. Yes, crossing traffic potentially moving at 110km/h.
and further out towards Lapstone and the like, there aren't many alternative options that are any safer. I think the breakdown lane as a cycling lane needs a bit of rethink - and a proper separated alternative created. Trek Madone 4.5, Giant TCR Advanced SL3 ISP Di2 (the green machine)

Re: 2013 Cycling Fatalities
Updated article at http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2013/02/22/359824_news.html According to the report the cyclist fell from his bike and was then hit by the truck. I am heading to the Rotary Conference in Geelong tonight. It will be a very sad weekend all round.
Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesHome from conference where friends where on the charity ride as part of the support crew. The word from witnesses is that this was just a tragic accident and in now way the fault of the poor truck driver, road conditions or how the cyclist was riding. Had he fallen the opposite direction, he would have been fine. It was great to see the broader Rotary family reaching out to everyone, other riders, support crew etc., to support them through this terrible time.
Re: 2013 Cycling Fatalities
No idea of the circumstances, but very sad regardless. I am sure you will be surprised to hear that what passes for journalism felt the need to report "No one was injured on the bus"
Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesThanks for moving this to the correct thread, find_bruce
I think you'll find that the comment about the bus passengers is just a standard piece of reporting etiquette to confirm that all others involved are OK. People do often need to know this.

Re: 2013 Cycling Fatalities
No details as to the circumstances, but sad all the same I was going to buy a fast, stylish bike, but I looked in the mirror & thought "you're not fooling anyone, you know"

I attended the memorial cycle for Tanya today and I've never seen so many cyclists in a single ride. You can see the photos on the first story on this Facebook page -> http://www.facebook.com/Cardiac.Challenge I hope we can use this as a platform to push for better cycle infrastructure in Cairns, particularly as we've just won the rights to host the 2014 and 2016 Mountain Bike World Cup.

My kids are well past that age but stories like this still twist a chainsaw into this parents guts. All strength to his family. ...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesThis one sounds entirely awful.
Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesI had some (pardon my French) wonderful person cyclist ask me today why the ELEVEN YEAR OLD didn't claim the lane. HE WAS ELEVEN! How about (if he was hit whilst being overtaken which I do not know) DRIVERS PAY ATTENTION?!

Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesThat toned down my sentiments rather well.

Re: 2013 Cycling FatalitiesThe second article seems to say he was crossing at a lights not riding along the road. The bus had a green light but they don't know if the boy had a walk signal or not. What isn't mentioned are details like if there was a green arrow, which would definitely mean a red for the boy or if there was no arrow, etc.
