Probably cos you keep calling them Fulcram and not Fulcrum :)

They almost look like a Racing 1, but I can't 100% tell from the pics.

I do know there's a Racing 1 Comp - http://www.this link is broken/fulcrum-racing-1- ... -wheelset/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but I don't know if they're the same ones.

I have been advised by the LBS these are Fulcrum's base wheels and are similar to Mavic Aksium.

For a $3000 bike I would expect there to be a pretty good wheel. Will have to wait to pickup the bike to see if they are a decent wheel set

Might need to upgrade the wheelset in the future

I wouldn't. This is one area most manufacturers can save some money and they know that many people are fussy on what wheels they ride on so it's easier to include standard wheels with the bike with the knowledge that the rider will add their own (better) wheels in due course.

Sure looks like a Racing 7. It seems Merida might have teed up with Fulcrum to be their wheel supplier as Focus bikes have for 2013. When they do this they don't always include the ones which are available after market, for example the Focus Cayo Evo 4.0 has Fulcrum WH6.5, which to me means something pretty basic, probably a bit better than the 7. In saying that, the 7 have great reviews for training wheels. I ride Fulcrum Quattros and I love them!

That is weird. Fulcrum 7's and 5's have 20 front spokes, 3's, 1's and 0's have 16. But the wheelset on the Merida has 18.

As far as I knew, the only Fulcrum front wheels that have 18 front spokes are the carbon Racing Speed, and the wheels on the Merida certainly aren't those.

They are Fulcrum Racing Competition an OEM wheelset (entry level).

Yeah I wondered what level fulcrum there are when looking at these range bikes.

My guess is no chance they are fulcrum 1 or fulcrum 3 and prob not fulcrum 5.

Entry level fulcrum 7's at best

To a lot of us who know Fulcrum wheels, we know what 7,5,3,1 and zero means, and if a bike with Fulcrum 7's is talked about, we automatically think UPGRADE NEEDED.
If the casual observer sees Fulcrum Racing Competition as the wheelset, they think they are good as they are used in competition, and carry on their cycling life not knowing (or caring) any better. Its only when they post on a bicycle website forum about their wheelset that a whole can of worms is opened up regarding how good their wheelset is and what would be a good upgrade. Sound familiar? :D

I bought a Merida Reacto 904 (my first road bike) last june which came with the same wheels. They are an entry level wheel which are a bit heavier, but were ok to start with. I recently upgraded to Fulcrum 3s and can tell a big difference. It's funny I forked out quite a bit for the new wheels and showed my wife, but she said they look exactly the same.

Well then, buy some Fulcrum Racing Zeros and she'll never notice but you will
