At the time i didn't realize Pijnen's name was on it.
I remember the 70's and 80's was a great period for Six Day events. To me, Pijnen was a stand out rider.
Cheers
He was more than a stand out, many believe he was the best ever - including my uncle who was a 6 dayman himself. We could probably argue the merits of the big 3, Sercu, Clarke and Pijnen - whatever the outcome he was a LEGEND.
I have a friend in France who collects jerseys, he has a fantastic collection ....I actually gave him my Tom Simpson original which my uncle passed on to me ...anyway, if you ever want to sell it, I know a buyer : )

Did your uncle ever ride in Melbourne and in what period?
I'd be interested to know his name as I a may have seen him race.

Reg / Reginald Arnold alias Roger Arnold.
Raced in Europe 1946 -1963.
He had a year in Australia in 1954, rode for Malvern Star with Hec Sutherland and Eddie Smith. He rode all the big tours, Sun Tour (4th), Tassie tour (1st), Goulburn to Sydney (1st), Echuca Tour (1st), Sydney to Melbourne (2nd) etc. See story about him in the current issue of Bicycling Australia, the one with Gilbert on the cover.

Thanks Derny,
I've always known of the name "Reg Arnold" but until now, didn't know that much about his career. As you would know
there's a lot of good info on the web about him.
I think the Eddie Smith you mention might be the same fellow I used to see at the old Melbourne board track when I raced
against his sons around 67' 68' as a juvenile.

Interesting how they ran the boards up and down instead of with the riding direction! Imaging that would have been a little vivivivivivibrating.

If it's the boards I remember as a very young kid, sitting underneath.
You would hear the rumble and rattle boards from the bunch as they went past.
It sounded like a freight train passing.
Childhood memories. :D

brentono you have some seriously cool photos. I have never seen a better photo of the Essendon Board Track. In the 1950's that track was the epicentre of track cycling in Australia. The promoter Ted Waterford contracted some of the world's biggest stars to his carnivals ... Reg Harris, Enzo Sacchi, Jos De Bakker, Oscar Plattner, Jan Derksen, Billy Guyatt, Patto, Mockridge ...
My dad and my uncle teamed up for an international madison race there in 1954, and absolutely smashed a class field .... got invited back the next month and repeated the dose. Reg was showing off a bit and riding his bike up onto the vertical advertising (where it says BSA on your photo), dont think anyone had seen that done in Australia. One of the onlookers said it was like watching "a fighter plane in a bunch of bombers"

The fishing photo - thought it was Hec but the hair put me off. He was bald by age 25 so he must have been young there with Patto.

I would love to know how long their tyres lasted in the six day races back then as my singles only lasted three nights  in the ones I rode and that was 3hrs a night.

Oh and two pairs of mits. :(

As a juvenile I was lucky enough to ride the last two seasons (68' and 69') at the old Melbourne board track.
I remember watching the Pro's, particularly if they were strung out in a 5 mile scratch race, they'd ride
right on the sprint line where there was a line of bolts. The track was faster and firmer (less vivibration) there because
you were also riding directly over one of the bearers/joists.
Also if it rained a couple of days before Saturday night, it would cause the boards to swell and tighten,
making the track a lot faster (less rattle).

DD you certainly have a great recall of the period, and I have many photos of early 50's
in Melbourne, from my old man (RIP)
Below, Hec (2nd Left) was a bit light on top, 1953 Vic Team at Aus Champs (Tasmania)

Hey Brentono,
Any chance of some more shots of Melbourne cycling.
I notice in that shot above, 56' Olympic gold medalist, Ian Browne (far left).

Another great shot, thanks Brentono, that's gotta be the old Nth Essendon track.
A while ago I tripped across a great article on the web, that told of how the Essendon track was dismantled
around 57' 58' and shipped to Sydney, to make way for the rebuilt Olympic Park track.
If I can find it again I'll post up the link.

For any one who's interested, here's the link to the article on the re-location
of the Nth Essendon Board Track to Sydney.

This link gives a great insight into the construction of the original 333
meter Olympic track (timber frame and base, concrete surface, timber duck boards)
which was later replaced with a 250 meter board track (steel frame, concrete duck boards).

IIRC, it was the first time they'd ridden a tandem together in competition!

What's happening with the gearing there for the pilot and stoker? It looks like the stoker has two chain rings. Is that the case, or is it a guard to stop the chain flying off of the chain ring?

BFV it looks to me like a pretty standard single side rear drive with the small captain's chainring connected to the small stoker's chainring while the OMGosh that is huge chainring drives the rear wheel. Works well for fixed gear & no need for tandem specific cranks

Aha! I've never seen a track tandem in real life, so I didn't know how it worked. Very clever.
