my bike trailer

not the same style of trailer, but my son just started school and i dont like the idea of his recently restored bike being left at school so im building this trailer so i can cart it home and back again to pick him up.

consists of an old gate cut up to form the frame, 2 front forks from 16" bikes i was scrapping, some colonial fence palings and some screws. i also ordered a eyelet style toe rod end from ebay which will be my hitch point. so all i need to buy still is a long bolt which the tie rod will go onto and make the draw bar and hitch bracket off the back of the bike. im also picking up a section of c-channel to hold the bike in place while being towed. (if you buy actual c-channel it costs about $30/m but if you buy fence post channeling its $12 for 3m) it should be all finished over the weekend apart from the tie rod which wont be here until monday/tuesday.

originally i was going to just use a old mud guard flipped upside down to hold the front wheel tow truck style but after testing it, it was too flimsy to work.

hopefully this can be built for under $35 (excluding mud guards)

ok so my $35 budget got blown out of the water due to my parents throwing out all their left over stain. so i bought some new stuff that also throws a clear gloss over the top. bought some fittings and other bits and pieces you cant see (mounts the timbers to the frame so no visible screws)

apart from the mud guards (which will take weeks to get here) the only things left to do is paint the rear rims black, attach the straps to the corners of the timebers and make the frame to bolt onto the tow bike.

ill most likely end up painting the whole frame black due to running out of green and putting a scratch through it. (black is easy to patch up if needed)











i bought a plastic cap to go in the top of the tube where the tie rod end/coupler is but i bought a 22mm instead of the 19mm one i needed.

ill update more once i get the frame built for the bike and can test it on the road

That is just brilliant. If your kid isn't the envy of everyone in the playground then I don't know what's wrong with them.

My little girl is still a few years off her first set of training wheels but I can't wait, top work Dad!

Just curious what suburb/school you can't lock up the bike with a few cable locks to fixed objects and expect to have someone with bolt cutters take them out?

its not that you CANT lock them up, its more we dont want it damaged or if its fine in the morning and storming in the afternoon we dont want to leave it over night. since i have a small car with prams in the boot there is no space to load a bike in. even without the pram i doubt it would fit and it gets attention.

my son now rides without training wheels so the trailer will get some mods to help hold the bike up.
