Tools needed to remove and install crankset?

Postby merlin6014 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 4:55 pm

Hi guys - little confused despite google.

I need to remove my Shimano 105 crankset and BB (shimano pressfit bb86) and install an FSA crankset and BB (megaexo).

What special tools (besides the regular allen keys ect) do I need.

So far I have a Park Tools BBT-9 in the cart along with some grease.

Anything else?

I dont think a Megaexo BB will fit in the Pressfit frame.

I damn well hope it does otherwise I'm out $$$$. Its a Scott Foil 40 if that helps. As far as I can tell from the FSA site they are compatible.

Megaexo is a screw in BB, unless you can get frame mount adapters (fsa may make them) I dont think it will fit

Looks like you need a different BB, the std Megaexo wont work, either

But my frame takes a bb86 bottom bracket and megaexo is compatible with that according to fsa. Those links are for bb30.

Edit - to explain further i am replacing the entire bb with a ceramic fsa one (comes with the crank) not just trying to use my shimano pressfit with the fsa.

If you know what bike you have and what parts you need.
Go to the Park tools site for "how to do the task info". Then list the tools you need.

Yes, but does the bracket you have with the cranks have a thread ? there is no thread on a BB86 pressfit. They do make a Pressfit FSA BB as per my wiggle links.

This.

The crankset will swapover fine but you need to buy the appropriate PressFit cups, your frames BB shell does not have threads to screw the MegaExo into.

OK I think I believe you now :D

But those links you posted both say "These adapters enable you to fit your Mega-Exo chainsets to BB30 frames."

I dont have a bb30 frame

You'll need a headset press with the adaptors for PF BBs OR, the MacGyver route of a long enough, beefy bolt, nut and large enough washers.

Safest option would be to take the bare frame and BB to a trusted LBS, a two minute job.

Maybe I am the one confused, but if he has a 105 crank with BB 86 bearings, doesn't that mean he can leave the BB86 bearing in and fit the FSA crank into it ?

No, axle sizing is similar but not the same.
