The fitness/fatness issue

Postby pacra » Wed Feb 06, 2013 2:12 pm

This article was on RN's Health Report 28/01/2013, http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/healthreport/how-exercise-can-change-your-life/4407748Basically it says "...new evidence on the benefits of exercise, how it extends lives and how being fit overwhelms being fat..."

A fuller source to the program is at the JAMA site
http://jama.jamanetwork.com/Issue.aspx?journalid=67&issueID=5251&direction=P
"Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Adiposity as Mortality Predictors in Older Adults"
free download in PDF.

While no expert, I find it amazing that almost all effort goes into navel searching over diet, soft drink and junk food, while any programs about activity get lip service.

While cycling is only one form of activity/excercise, you would think that by facilitating cycling to those who can and otherwise would (lycra or not), the saving in public health costs would make it self funding or better.

The above article and conclusions are not a one off, over the last decade other studies in journals have directly and anecdotely come to similar conclusions.

You have to wonder whether goverments and their advisers ever read any of these articles, or do they just get research from New Idea.

It's because the people who write this stuff... The people that plan the programs, the pollies, and the people that are charged with getting the message out... They are all fat or at least inactive.

The message is that exercise is good for us.. But they - like everyone else in our society have been seduced by inactivity.

Personally... If I have one more fat doctor telling me to loose weight something bad will happen to the tv.
Once you can climb hills on a bike it's all downhill.

Hopefully I'll know what that's like..... one day.

There is more money in keeping people fat and sick. Not much money in keeping people fit and healthy.

Make mars bars cheaper and easier to get than equal calories from quality organic fruit.
Make cycling a 'nuisance' on the roads. Make cycling appear more dangerous than it really is.

Keep people dumbed down about the importance of high carb low fat diets. Make em think steamed rice and fruit will make em fat and fried chicken aka atkins/paleo diet will make em slim.
Vegan since 2001.
