Ms 3 star tandemHi all ,
While out riding today noticed a old tandem frame on the back of a ute out front of vintage shop. Upon closer inspection noticed the 3 stars and ... Cinelli bar and stem with badge ... Made some enquiries and picked it up for a bargain I suspect. Have had. Quick look on net for such a thing And have t found much at all. Am yet to get the thing in my hands so don't have serial numbers and other details. It stay tuned. Cheers Sp
Re: Ms 3 star tandemshall I be the first to say it?
fuh-ow-toes, please Kym
All manner of half finished projects and a bit of randonneuring I used to be tech-savvy. Now I'm just tech-weary.
Re: Ms 3 star tandemHopefully pick it up tomorrow so will try to get dome pics organised ... I should point out in order to avoid disappointment this frame looks like its been resprayed 26 times and possibly had a backyard frame repair .
Not sure about it being track ... Doesn't have track drops at rear end ... Either way a fun project !
Re: Ms 3 star tandemHopefully it was made as a tandem, not two bikes slapped together
I was going to buy a fast, stylish bike, but I looked in the mirror & thought "you're not fooling anyone, you know"
Re: Ms 3 star tandemGood point ... Not ruling it out ... But hope not
Re: Ms 3 star tandemSo ... As find Bruce hinted this tandem is in fact a complete mongrel ...even the cinelli bar and stem will take some work .... Maybe I can sell the cinelli badge and recover the costs .
Might just hang the Malvern star mongrel II on the wall in the shed and have a good chuckle from time to time
Re: Ms 3 star tandemWas it just 2 bikes slapped together or is it a genuine factory tandem?
If it's a genuine factory tandem & a real dunger, I've been looking for a tandy frame, total rebuild isn't an issue.
Re: Ms 3 star tandemI suspect front end genuine Malvern star 3 star with another bike welded on ... Even the chain rings looks like they have been welded on ... So as you can imagine a finely tuned piece of Australian cycling history !
Re: Ms 3 star tandemWhat a pity - properly built tandems are pretty rare, old ones even more so.
Frankenbikes are unfortunately more common I was going to buy a fast, stylish bike, but I looked in the mirror & thought "you're not fooling anyone, you know"
Re: Ms 3 star tandemOh well.. .show us some pics at least for a laugh!

I have no idea what it actually is (was?) but it is sort of tandem shaped. It would not be at all strange if history came to the conclusion that the perfection of the bicycle was the greatest achievement of the nineteenth century.
Re: Ms 3 star tandemHamster, they need to add a motor to match the look of that one
stevendavid, this originally sounded like you might have made a good score with a 3 star, cinelli bars and stem etc. Looking forward to seeing the pics of how bad it actually is LG = Low Gear
Re: Ms 3 star tandemGee - it's not that bad. I'd be tempted to build it back up after inspecting the welds. Plenty of room for a stoker unlike a lot of home built tandems, which it might not be. any chance of some close ups of the attachment of the rear part of the frame and the boom tube arrangement?
So we get the leaders we deserve and we elect, we get the companies and the products that we ask for, right? And we have to ask for different things. – Paul Gilding
but really, that's rubbish. We get none of it because the choices are illusory.
Re: Ms 3 star tandemBetter than I expected.... I've seen a few shockers!
Most of the tubes are parallel, for starters! Kym

Re: Ms 3 star tandemLooks OK, is the 'rear end' welded or brazed on? If it's brazed you are probably on a winner, welds, well probably not.
Still the bars, stem and chainsets are all good stuff by the look of them and worth the purchase. Cheers Richard
