Lions CCIA Ride 2013 - South Burnett

Postby Dan » Wed Feb 20, 2013 1:56 pm

I posted elsewhere a week or so ago about this event, but thought a thread would be more appropriate.

A few BNA members (myself, Wazza and Elantra) are participating in the Lions CCIA Fun Ride this year, from 2-6 April. The ride covers approximately 400km over five days, travelling through the South Burnett region of Queensland. The ride begins and concludes in Kingaroy, with overnight stops in Nanango, Goomeri and Murgon.

The Charity being supported is the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA) - which, as you have probably guessed, conducts research into childhood cancer. The institute's research 'takes a multi-pronged and solutions-oriented approach to childhood cancer. We are studying everything from what causes childhood cancer, to treating it more effectively, to ensuring survivors have the best possible quality of life' (CCIA, 2013).

We're doing it for the challenge, and the fun of it (of course), however there's a serious fundraising side to it. If you feel like supporting financially, links are below. If you feel like offering moral support, feel free to post a reply to that effect - it makes training in the rain a little easier :D

Links to Lions CCIA Homepage, CCIA, and fundraising pages for Dan, Wazza and Elantra are here.

Thanks for reading!

Do you train on those roads? Most of the roads around here are pretty crap at the moment. Should be an interesting ride.

Cheers

Interesting about the roads - thank you.

good on you, Dan, Wazza and Elantra. Great cause. Hope you have a great ride.

My SO and I are also doing a Lions Charity Ride, Lions Ride for Sight http://201v3.lions.org.au/201V3%20Ride%20For%20Sight in Victoria in April, 452km from Orbost to HMAS Cerberus. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/rfs-2013

Good job, Tracey! Looks an interesting ride. Where are your overnight stops? I will be in Melbourne whilst you are out enjoying yourself so I will think about your ride. Our ride this year is shorter than usual so I'm hoping the elevation during the ride isn't too challenging. We are having a 'training' ride this Sunday so it will be good to catch up with some familiar faces.
One of us will provide a ride report during/ after the ride, I hope you can do the same.

How many beers do need to drink tonight to effectively carb load for the entire five days?

Not possible - you will have to reload each night. :)

You'd also need to wash them down with a few itilian kebabs (pasta/pizza wrapped in ravoli)

Have you seen The Office episode about the 'fun run'? Michael (the boss) eats about a kilo of creamy mushroom pasta minutes before the race to 'carb load'. He spews it up shortly after and struggles onwards. Funny.

I did hear a story from a friend once, who overheard Pat Rafter telling his nutritionist he didn't have to worry too much about carb loading, as he was already in the habit of eating lots of Granny Smith apples.

Ccia report day one. Mutiny on the cards - some crew members unable to keep Tour de France dreams at bay. The three musketeers remain optimistic.
