  Woah that's weird. I can see the point, but with the chainstays so long, wouldn't it be a matter of either making them strong enough that they don't provide a lot of comfort, or light enough to be comfortable but then flexy as hell?

Long chain-stays aren't any really major disadvantage, but in that format they will not add any great frame suspension flex - look at those short, steep seat-stays after all  . Long chain-stays give extra comfort mainly because they extend the wheelbase and you feel the movement of the rear wheel less. In this case the wheelbase is not significantly lengthened and the riders butt is way back over the rear wheel. At the same time he has a very poor position on the bike with his feet well forward and he's still trying to reach those bars - looks darned awful to me.

My Thorn Nomad has long stays - 47cm. But the seat tube is still the normal sort of ~72 degree angle. It's a great bike to ride over rough stuff.

Wouldve thought the main issue with that Merckx aberration would be a biomechanical one..... the weird leg forward 'throw' ?

Like a drop bar recumbent ?

The Thorn is well within spec il padrone, and 'looks' so much righter than that unfortunate Eddy bike

Sorry

I mean any road bike with a sloping top tube is ugly. They look like girls bikes.

The ugliest thing on that bike to my eyes is the disc brakes :? .

Surely tht would have to be really heavy to be strong enough not to fall apart when you hit a bump. Forks aside its a little reminiscent of a slingshot bike (no down tube)

Yes, but the Slingshot had a wire cable to triangulate it........ and some seat-stays to hold the load.

If the designer was really worried about aero, they wouldn't have disc brakes and tucked the rear wheel behind the seatpost more as per modern aero bikes.

Also no amount of aero is worth sliding down the road on your face because your unsupported frame suddenly let go.

I can see why this didn't work well. There is still a supporting triangle made by the stays and the seat tube. I can't see how it would give much flex. Also as said previously, you'd have to have your saddle a long way forward to get the standard pedaling position.
