Tyres For Commuter

Hey guys,
The uni year starts in a couple of weeks for me and I need a new set of tyres.
My bike(Reid Condor, I know I know, it does the job) It has the cheapest of cheap
25c tyres on it at the moment. I'd like to go for a wider tyre and the frame has enough
space to accommodate a 32c but I have no idea what brands are reputable, I don't
want to start a brand war, I just need an idea of where to start.

Brands that have a pretty good name - Vittoria/Geax, Continental, Schwalbe, Maxxis. There are probably lots of others I don't have experience with in recent years.

It will be mainly road, it's fairly dodgy though.

Then methinks you could get awat with 28s. I swear by Conti Gatorskins for my commuter but there's plenty of options available.

mate, i've chucked a set of michelin "city" 28's on my bike and they're tough as old boots, and at less than AU$16 each they were also damn cheap from a popular UK online bike shop

Are punctures a regular issue?
Do you run mudguards or are you considering running them in the future?

I've only had a couple of punctures in the last year and a half, on the same dodgy tyres.
I'm not planning on running mudguards at all to be honest.

I've had very good experiences with Schwable. I run Marathon Supreme, but they are expensive. The Marathon plus are less expensive and excellent. If you are trying to save money online is a lot cheaper. Those Michelins look cheap and if good would represent great value. You would be able to get 28s on your rims I reckon, my tyres are 28mm wide and it is a nice size.

I wouldn't discount mudguards, they are very effective.

+1 to marathon plus. there are quite a few of us on here that use them for commuting. Am up to 6000kms on mine.

In that case I suggest you have a look at the regular Marathons. The pluses are more money which is probably pointless for you.

And the Marathon Plus are ridiculously heavy. There are significantly lighter tyres that will give you perfectly fine puncture protection, some equally as good as the Plus. Just that they will weigh 65% of the weight.

I've had good experiences with the 28mm versions of the Vittoria Randonneur and Continental Sports Contact. The latter is thinning now so I've just bought some Schwalbe Duranos for future use.

I run 28c continental GP 4 seasons on my commuter. I don't do big km compared to some but I never really get punctures and I wanted to lean towards a faster tyre. Never felt like I had a problem with grip in the dry or wet either, and I have ridden in some pretty heavy downpours.

I've recently switched from a 700 x 23c Kenda to 700 x 25 Vittoria Randonneur, due to the recent rain and punctures.

No punctures so far, definitely more grip in the rain. Cheap too at $35 per tyre.
