Headsets

Just started looking at headsets for my Surly Ogre build.
Someone recommended Cane Creek as a good brand.
I've just started to look and noticed on Wiggle that of two that were mentioned to me:
Cane Creek 40 Series Traditional 1 1/8 Inch Headset ( http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cane-creek-40-s ... h-headset/ )
and
Cane Creek 110 Series Headset (External 1 1/8 Inch) - ( http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cane-creek-110- ... 1-18-inch/ )

The 40 series description mentions it being suitable for both road and mtb whilst the 110 series only mentions road.
Now I'm new to the whole bike building thing, especially threadless forks and ahead stems, so am in the dark.
From my shaky memory I think it was the 110 someone recommended as a really good model whilst I got the 40 series from the Surly site as in its
the headset thats on an Ogre when you buy a complete bike.
Why might one be suitable for both road and mtb and the other (dearer) not be?
Any thing else I might need to know with regards a purchase decision?

Both these headsets would be suitable for an external cup headtube (like the Surly Ogre). I'd go for the cheaper model to save some money.

I have an FSA Orbit Z in silver you can have if it will fit. Bought the wrong one for the Pioneer. Just pay the postage. Should be about $7.00.

The good thing is, you don't need a crown race installer to fit this one. I dunno if you need one for the Cane Creek headset.

Looking at the Cane Creek headset you posted, the size guide does not list the 40, and the 110 comes in several sizes. Which size do you need?

The Orbit Z fits a 1 1/8 steerer and a 50mm OD head tube.

You'll also need one of these and one of these and one of these and possibly one of these. Or be able to improvise similar tools.

The frame should be pre-reamed ready to install the headset cups.

The size headset listed on the Surly site: http://surlybikes.com/bikes/ogre is Cane Creek 40, 1-1/8˝ threadless. Black.

I'm struggling to find a reference to when you say "and a 50mm OD head tube" (I'm still searching).

In the frame geometory section I can find reference to head tube and angle and length.........

In the frame highlights I see of the fork/: " 1-1/8" x 260mm threadless steer tube"
and of the Headset/Steertube: "1-1/8" threadless"

I'm lost

With regards to tools, my accommodation situation is somewhat tenuous so at this stage I anticipate having to get a bike shop putting on any headset and any preparation of the BB area and wheelbuilding. I had to give all my tools away back in NSW and am not in a hurry to repeat the performance.

Thank you for that Antipodean, it actually shows what turned out to be no better than a guess by me was in fact correct (pure luck).

No, the Orbit Z wont fit your Surly.

The Orbit Z is an internal headset, rather than an external. The Surly uses an external headset where the bearing cups press into the frame but sit external to the frame. Internal headsets have the bearings fully enclosed in the steerer tube.
