Shouldn't you wait for our resident self-appointed wheel guru to offer his critique first :P

So put this together as a street whip so I can reserve my Bridgestone to pure track/sunday ride type business.

Just waiting for my new carbon wheel set to turn up so I can remove the current boat anchors on there.

That is, replacing a 2.5kg wheelset with a 1300gram wheelset. Should tip the scales at about 7.3kg total weight. About 6.8/9 if I swap out the Campy track pedals for my keo's.

No tugnut. Just beefy drop outs. They have inbuilt chain tensioners anyway.

Never been a fan of the modern ones... Had been hunting for a set of old Pista's to go on my Hillman track project, but scored these new ones with BB for an incredible price (all new).

Once I got them out of the box/installed them, yeah, I'm sold. I prefer them to the DA 7600's on my Bridgestone, which I thought were some of the best looking cranks ever!

What, something like this?

Courtesy of Brown Jersey. Yes I'm more than seriously considering them when I get a better FG. They look amazing, not to mention that the ring shape reminds me of something...

Nup. And it has horrendous toe-overlap with 165mm cranks. Worse than my Bridgestone which has 170's and it's pretty bad being a track specific bike as well.

I can however buy a matching TT fork from Planet X which has 10mm more rake, and a brake hole if I ever become more sensible

foot retention as a must for safety etc or just preferable / more efficient ? have preferred the open space and control of just the flats .... and having commuted and ridden fixed on and off for a few years haven't had an issue... but could be convinced otherwise with an opinion or two

Safety, more efficient, better control, additional stopping power.

If you're spinning out down a hill at 65km/h then you are going to want foot retention.

How do you skid?

Didn't he say he's been doing it for two years with no problems? I don't ride fixed, but I'm positive that Brisbane has bigger hills than Perth. How I understand this is as so: zero retention = crazy = meh = rad = whatever.

However, to stay (kinda) on topic, can one ride fixed with cleats?

I did Beach Rd on SPuDs a couple of weeks ago if that's any help. Seemed to be a bit quicker but that's only a feeling as the FG doesn't run a 'puter. Me feet were definitely more comfy.

Yeah I run Look Keo's on my other fixed gear/track bike.

Super secure and skidding is no problem. I've never clipped out unintentionally.

I always ride my fix gear with clip ins. But I ride mine like a normal bike. It's my commuter/trainer. Not some cool trickster toy. :)

Surly fixed gear, used as my main commuter awhile back. Running 65GI (hilly commute)
Currently hanging up in pieces, awaiting a lighter wheelset (and a pump holder)
I must admit, i never even thought to use clip ins, but going to give them a try now.
Cheers for the comments people.
