Upcoming Mont will likely be last major event for this bike - a 29er is on the cards, just not sure which one. Tossing up between a Whyte, a Giant and the Scalpel. Other possibles are the Tallboy or a Spesh of some kind.
Almost finished my new 29er Hardtail build... just need to trim off the steerer and shorten the brake cables now Ive got the bar height sorted.

I wish I had only spent $839 so far on off road biking. Here's all my gear now hanging off an iron horse frame bought in the market place. Can't wait to get it dirty this arvo.
I have built three bikes out of the parts I discarded to get this far, I would have been much better off just buying something new to start with!
Picked this up yesterday, last years Focus Black Forest 2.0, realised I have no idea how to ride a MTB but headed for the nearest dirt track to have a crack. Can someone point me in the direction of a newbie thread, only got experience in roadies and am clueless on forks and disc brakes. . Thanks.

A suggestion to make riding more comfortable and safer: Move your brake levers inboard a little so you are only using one or two fingers to brake and tilt the levers down far enough so that in your normal position with a finger lying on top of the lever, your wrists are straight. Reaching up to them as they are will reduce braking efficiency and hurt like hell on a long descent.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Took both my Peace 9R and the Mongoose out on a rough single trail yesterday (friend's bike is out of action so he borrowed one of mine). We alternated between the bikes, and somewhat surprisingly everything went well! The Mongoose held up like a champ- nothing came loose or broke so I guess I did okay

was built up as a wet-weather commuter, and for something else to ride on weekends if i don't feel like riding my dualie.
however, its an absolute blast, love riding it - just fitted the carbon bars to try and help make it a little easier for those longer rides.
next thing - tubeless rims !
Here's my completed build- a full rigid single speed based around the Sanderson Breath cro-mo frame.
This is my first attempt at building a bike 'from scratch' and I did everything other than install the headset and cut the steerer tube. Between getting a great deal on the frame (ex-display) and using a combination of used, ex-display/demo and som new parts it ended up being a great bang for buck build.
Went for the first ride this morning and it performed great- very fast and easy to control and plenty of grip. Running 32T front and 19T rear, which doesn't give me as much speed on the flats but suits the hilly area I usually ride really well.
So yeah, overall really happy with the result and it was a great learning experience too. I buggered up a few things along the way but nothing that couldn't be fixed
Rescued from hard rubbish when I was living in Hobart, and sitting proudly right on top of Mt Wellington. 3 hours up, 30 minutes down Lets just say braking technology has improved a bit since the 70's!!!!
My trusty old 'goose. Bought her brand new waaaaay back in 2000, and she has been in constant use since. Who knows how many kms on her!!! Only very recently replaced as my main ride, and now converted to commuting duties. Frame, stem, seat post and shifters/brake levers are the only original parts - everything else has been worn out and replaced, several times for some things.
And the new bike. Bought this last year, partly on the basis of Stromlo (living in Canberra now, mountain biking one of the only consolations for having to be here....) being brutal on a hardtail (ie the Mongoose). Last of the 26ers, 29ers just don't do it for me. The original Giant wheelset lasted about 5 minutes, so scored a tubeless SLX wheelset as a warranty claim = win
