Giant Psl-1 wheels be warned!!

Postby roadiematt » Sat Mar 09, 2013 9:54 pm

Hi all, recently upgraded to a 2013 tcr advanced 2 which is a great bike but it has one major issue which is its wheels. My bike is 4 months old and has snapped 3 spokes all on the non drive side on the rear wheel, my question is has anybody else had problems with Giants generic wheel system?? I have lost all confidence in my bike thanks to this quality issue, my bike is now in getting fixed again ,Be aware if you are looking at this bike.

I got reports from a Giant concept store that spokes have been breaking on bikes sitting on the shop floor, unridden.

Without trying to sound rude, I am wondering what you weigh??

At 90 kgs, I have snapped a couple of spokes on a set of Fulcrum 5's

Is it possible that weight is the issue??

cheers

Early last year, a mate bought a 2012 Giant Defy with the PSL-0 wheels, and broke 2 spokes within the first 6 weeks. he weighs around 90kg.
The Giant LBS told me Giant don't publish weight limits, or recommendations.
That put me off buying a Giant.

Never had issues with my Giant (DT Swiss) wheelset. Maybe coz I don't have the torque of a V8 but potholes etc I don't worry a lot about if I can't avoid them.

Then i guess they'd better be happy to accept lots of warranty issues. Which, from all accounts, they do without fuss.

Bigger? I'm just on 6ft and weigh 85-odd...does this class me as bigger??

(ps, I do not have these rims, just balked at the suggestion anyone around 90k could be classed as big...)

Not sure this is a rider size issue, one the guys I ride with is under 80k and was continually breaking spokes on his, swapped to some Mavics and no problems since

I have a 2012 tcr advanced sl1 with the same wheels. I'm a big guy at around 95-98 kg and have had no issues with the wheels. Still tru and no broken spokes after a couple thousand km. I love my bike and the wheels!

I'm 5"10 and a lean 85kg I fit the breakage demographic no issues at all. I will post up if I do, I think if they are breaking that often then there is another problem. I jump kerbs btw and treat them as training wheels :) :)

I've have exactly the same problem with my 2013 Defy Advanced 2 which runs the same wheels. I'm 80 kg and have broken three rear spokes (two drive side) in the last 100 kilometres. Bike has spent more time in the shop than on the road which is frustrating.

You have PSLR-1's.. Much better wheel ;) Unless your bike shop gave you the inferior PSL1's...

Is 6 foot tall for a girl? Yes. Is 85Kg heavy for a girl?... I'm not going to answer that in case you hunt me down.

Average weight for a man is ~82Kg.

The Giant PSL-1 wheelset has 18 front and 24 rear spokes which sounds low for heavier riders. I wouldn't build a wheelset for a +80kg rider with so few spokes. Yes Shimano does it but the spokes have very high tension and the rims can take it. With the non-drive side laced radially there are no pulling spokes as such to transmit torsional force so the drive side spokes have to do all the work. The DT Champion spokes used are straight gauge rather than butted and so don't tend to stretch as much to share the load with other spokes when the wheel hits a bump.

Great post thanks, the frustrating thing for me when I bought the bike I was 96klg, I wish the bikeshop would have recommended either a different bike or a wheel with a higher spoke count. Thx for post.
