Postby outnabike » Fri Jan 25, 2013 4:46 pm

Tasie is home to the Penny Farthing races in Evansdale.
This from last months caravan and Motorhome. A readers contribution. Great looking bikes.

The next part-time penny farthing building course is soon to commence at Brisbane North TAFE. If you want to build you own, get in quick.

I was talking to Alan Sumner today,(very Rare chance) PF builder and Racer still at his shop, about getting some wheels rebuilt for my 1956 Healing, Sorry he said I'm off to Tassie for the races, can't help ya till Feb'. Really enjoyed the chat with him, so many topics to cover, from,
" I used to be a distributor for Healing" to the 50's downturn through to the cycling revival, bmx, "kids had their bikes all over the path they did" and "this bloke came up the path at such a rate and he wasn't even pedaling" (electric)
I look forward to getting back to the shop with my wheels. And what a shop it is, you CANNOT go anywhere in the shop without stepping on some sort of shop stock, it is filled full of hardware and cycling stuff from decades past and even Velocity wheels. 8)

Great pic , these blokes are really competing. I would not like to roll a tyre at that height off the road either.

the only issue was when a mouse ran from one of the hay bales and under a rear wheel, which caused the rear wheel to slide, with the rider over the bale into a spectator... eek

.... I heard it was someone's mother ... double eek.
Apparently she was compensated by getting one of the winner's medal. Total gentleman.

They should have a class where you have to wear period garb too - lycra just looks wrong on a penny farthing!

When you build the penny yourself, you can wear what you damn well please.

Love the side saddle but jeez she'd have to have good balance. And the brake levers on the other one just makes that bike a perfect commuter. :D

But how did the unicyclist get up onto his one?

with a little help from his friends to start, then he did a full lap on the monster unicycle.

Bell raced side-saddle, and she also was standing on the seat, etc (no photos as I was in disbelief) during a parade lap.

Totally disagree, Lycra on a pf is appropriate - provided the pf is carbon fibre
