Selle SMP

Postby mountainman403 » Sun May 04, 2008 10:19 am

Hi.
Anyone got or used a selle SMP seat. Thats the one with a huge gap the entire leingth and sloping front.
I tend to get numb after an hour of seated climbing (thats all i do) and am looking for a new saddle. I have read that it was designed with medical specialists and helps blood flow and soft tissue pressure. I have also been reading about impotence and erectile disfunction (dosnt effect me, Im married)
Just got to get over the look  .

Very interested but how did it feel. Was the gap ok, did it put the pressure elsewhere and cause other probs.
Thanks

I think I have a weird shape arse   ...I liked it but my sit bones didn't feel right on it all the time....sometimes I didn't even notice it and sometimes I couldn't sit right. It came highly recommended by a few elite riders who swear by it.I switched to it from a Fizik Arione which was hell !!!.And they are supposedly super comfy so I am going back to tried and tested Fizik Aliante.I suffer from numbness in the genital area and I know my position is damn near to perfect, the Arione was agony and once I switched to this saddle I had no pressure at all in that area (or any area)...It was a close call but I feel I would rather take the weight penalty on the Aliante (might get the lightweight carbon one soon) as I know I can race long distances on that no problems...and all my upcoming races are 2 hours plus...eek!...with hills ...argh!!.

Thanks to Toolonglegs I am the proud owner or his saddle. (Thanks for that, I know you were moving and all).
I went for an hour and a half hard climb last night and found the saddle to be firm in its padding but comfortable, around the 45 min to 1hr mark still going strong and after the 1.5 hours no numbness at all. I think the saddle is tops just a bit firm but I will get used to it, didnt stop the huge calf cramps I have been getting for the past 2 weeks or the trashed legs I have today.

Cramps are often attributed to dehydration, try drinking more water and ensure you don't get dehydrated before, during or after the ride. A bit of powerade mixed in with your water will also assist.

I have ridden one of these saddles, they are a bit wierd compaired to a standard cut out saddle eg slr gelflow, but once you get used to them they are great.

I find that I no longer get numb but it is a bit firm, sort of comfortable but a little to firm. Maybe my sit bones are a bit to wide and the soft tissue is taking some of my weight.
So I spose the search goes on. ((AT)#$%& it) Any help ???? Please ???

I've got a selle italia SLR T1 and it is reasonably comfortable though I stand up at regular intervals and find this improves blood flow to the nether regions.

Saddles are just too personal to take anyone's suggestions. I tried out a Selle Italia SLR gel flow and it gave me bruised sit bones after around 5 mins. Stuck with it for a couple of weeks, but just never got on with it at all. May as well have taken a brick and stuck that on the seatpost. However, there are plenty that swear by this saddle.

Picked up a battered old Flite (no gel) and that was a lot better. I've gotten on with a WTB Rocket V and a standard Velo saddle that came with a bike, so I'm not sure there is a surefire way to find a saddle besides trying them out.

I have a Selle Italia SLC Gel Flow on my Cannondale and a Selle Italia Flite Gel Flow on my Colnago.

Basically, in Selle Italia terminology, "Gel Flow" = anatomical cut-out for the perineum (and they use some gel to smooth it out I think). There isn't a whole lot of "gel" that is actually there.

The SLC is a bit harder / firmer on the sit bones than the Flite, and has a larger cut out, but they otherwise have a similar fit. I personally find both these saddles quite comfortable, but they do need a bit of breaking in.

I find that the SLC is rather similar to the Specialized Toupe that I had previously, but a little bit softer and having a more comfortable cutout.

Cheers.

I was on an old Flite Gel Flow ... awesome. Just got a 08 Flite Gel Flow (white to match bike) and it feels harder and little narrower, but maybe it not broken in yet. I'll give it another few rides till I make up my mind.

I loved the old Flite Gel Flow though.

Mountainman check your PM.

Does anybody know a good way to measure sit bone width and maintain some semblance of dignity?

When seated on the SMP saddle, the seat should be set so that about half of your weight rests against the wider rear part of the seat and the other half on your sit bones. This may mean tilting the seat more forward than with just about any other type of saddle. I also suffered from sore sit bones until I researched the above hint.

I've also got this SMP saddle which cost $42 from c r c. This may be a solution for you if you get sore sit bones. Not a light weight saddle, but luxuriously padded. At first I thought it was too soft but it has tested very well.

I will be testing it out tomorrow in a 78km Cyclosportif event, i hope its better than the saddle that came with my Orca...that was an arse hatchett saddle!!...i hope it's ok, toolonglegs comments have me worried now..i will let you know how it performs.

Trimike, saddles are a bit like shoes - very personal. What works for one will be agony for another.

Hope the 78km event goes well.

So true. I have gone through $1500 of the top saddles B4 being happy with my fizik. I also have friends that love every saddle that I have used for under 100km and given the flick.

hi i've been using the evolution style for 2 years now
it did however take me about 1 month(8x 80kms rides) to get totally use to it
once it has been set up correctly, it feels very comfortable (you will just feel it when it is set up correctly)

I've been riding on my SMP for about 9 months now it's the "Xtra" one or something i rubbed the logo off but I'm not fussed about that, anyway I haven't had any rear end pain since about a week after i bought it and for most of that time it was on a alu trek going over bumpy roads so that says something. If your worried that u won't like it I know quite a few stores now that have a demo saddle program where u can borrow a seat for a week or 2

Easy and quick method :
Sit on double wall corrugated cardboard, preferably naked and use the clean cardboard
Then you just measure the distance between dimples in the cardboard
