Bike Purchase

Postby Dan » Tue Mar 26, 2013 10:20 am

Hey how's it going I bought a bike yesterday off treeBay for $80 cos it seemed like a good deal. Its made of "1020 hi tensile" and has shimano gears and Kenda wheels.

I don't really know much about it but I liked the silver colour. I don't really ride bikes much well not since my old BMX when I was a kid. Can someone tell me if its worth doing up and selling and if so how much its worth? Don't wanna waste my time if its not a good bike.

Or, if anyone here wants to buy it, send me a pm and we can talk.

Thanks guys.

Edit - I'll try and put the pictures in - can someone tell me how to do that?

According to Drubie's guide, 1020 ain't the best material. I'd clean it up and re-list it on Gumtree as a great commuter for ~$150.

Edit: I've totally just been trolled, haven't I? Pays to put 2+2 together and not come up with 691...

;)

Was it the poorly attempted grammatical inconsistencies or the 2000+ posts which tipped you off?

1020 is 92% better than Reynolds 531, I think you've found a diamond there Dan.

I was also a bit confused as Dan's post looked suspiciously like another post I had just read last week. But I wasn't game to be the first one to call you on it as I haven't been around long enough. :P

As to your bike purchase I think you've purchased a very rare, very expensive collectable bicycle. My guess of value is somewhere between 500,000 to 1,000,000 (you choose the units). Of course, this is if you sell it on the Plutonian market on the dwarf planet Pluto as they're desperate to be validated now that they have been removed as a major planet.

The next cargo ship for Pluto leaves in 1 exasecond, so you haven't got much time! :P

so i got a picture here and the gear changers & derailers say 'Campagnolo Tullio' on them and have a 50 on them.

Is this good? I think this might be worth something, maybe I'll keep it or turn it into a fixie or beach cruiser or low rider.

Whatever you do, you must completely repaint it in rainbow and put those rainbow spokey dokeys on. Better resale value then. 8)

You forgot to say 'the bike used to look like this but I threw away all the junk it had fitted on it, powdercoated it awesome hot pink, cut off the thingy-bit that held the gears at the back with a hacksaw and slammed on some white deep V's with white tyres. Now it's a fully sick fixie and I want $2,000 for it.'

The above addition may or may not be based on true sale listings on fleece(you)bay ...

Nah, the 50 means it's worthless, you need 150. Send them to me and I will dispose of them properly.

I tried that forum first but they weren't very helpful. I guess they thought I was just trying to find out how much my bike is worth

It's junk. Send it to me for disposal. I'll even pay postage for you. Aren't I helpful?

Disaster averted - just set a calendar reminder and look at it again on Monday.

Crapper 10 speed, mass produced k mart quality stuff. Good fixie candidate/boat anchor. I'd spray it purple.

*Edit* looks like I just more or less repeated the last 25 posts. Read before posting man, read before posting...

*double edit* although, nobody has mentioned the equally depressing 'leave it under a tree for 15+ years then when it's just beyond saving, sell it on eBay. Had someone bring a bike into my not for profit the other week like that, an Apollo IV with full SunTour Cyclone / Gen 2. It brought a tear to my eye, nothing was saveable and it was all impossibly seized and rusted and covered in birdpoop. Even had the original spare tubular wrapped under the saddle, the guy said it was his dads racer in the 80s. Damn clueless vandals...
